When you look at a Grand Theft Auto game, or anything that Rockstar concocted, you will always see a showcase of awards under its name. Grand Theft Auto V was no different. GTA V was the biggest game in the series. Set in a fictional Los Angeles, the game followed the lives of Micheal, Trevor and Franklin as they committed heinous crime, set up heists, and tried to deal with marriage issues.

The game started to win awards already in 2012 at the Spike VGX awards for Most Anticipated Game, a year before its release. During its release year, it was nominated for 108 awards, of which it won 35 of them. Now 35 might seem a bit low when compared to other games on this list, but when you look at the actual awards, you will see that it went home with almost every Game of the Year/Best Game award. Cnet, the Spike VGX awards, Edge, Telegraph, and others all awarded the open world action adventure Game of the Year status.

Mass Effect 2

Released in 2010, Mas Effect 2 was one of the first games to receive over one hundred nominations. Mass Effect 2 followed the journey of Commander Shepard who was in the middle of an intergalactic war between humanity and the insectoid species, the Collectors. With a deep decision based system, and great RPG elements, it is no surprise that Mass Effect 2 went on to winning the amount of awards that it did.

The game was nominated for 159 awards, of which it won 68 of them. Some of these include Game of the Year across various websites like Eurogamer and IGN, and it even won the Outstanding Achievement in Story at the 14th Annual D.I.C.E Awards. Mass Effect 2 set the bar for intergalactic storytelling for years to come

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite, BioShock: The Collection

2013 might have been the year of The Last of Us, but Naughty Dog had some stiff competition thanks to BioShock Infinite.  Bioshock Infinite followed the usual premises in the series, set in a alternate world where people lived in a beautiful city in the sky called Columbia. Booker DeWitt has arrived in the city with the aim to kidnap Elizabeth. Needless to say, things go south as Zachary Comstock tries to stop him by any means possible.

Bioshock Infinite was nominated for 193 awards, and ended the year with 71 of them in the bag. These include Best Shooter, Song in Game, and Character of the Year at the Spike VGX 2013 ceremony.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will always be remembered for the great RPG that it is. Its lush open world and rich story drew players in for hundreds of hours. Geralt sets off on a journey to find Ciri, who is being hunted by the Wild Hunt. along the way he fights monsters, explores dungeons and caves, and even crafts epic Witcher gear. The long awaited game came along and set a new standard for future RPGs.

The Witcher 3 was an experience like no other, and the awards it won are proof of that. With 107 nominations, of which it won 78, CD Projekt Red’s latest entry to the series beat out some amazing competition. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt went home with Game of the Year, Developer of the Year, and Best RPG at last year’s Spike Video Game Awards. This was done while going against some notable releases such as Fallout 4, MGSV: The Phantom Pain, and Batman: Arkham Knight.

The Last of Us

Originally released in 2013, The Last of Us came to PS3 with a humble approach. From its initial reveal, right to its release date, the game was one of the most anticipated games of 2013.

The game followed the story of Ellie and Joel through a post-apocalyptic world where the developer’s take on the Cordycep Virus, which takes control of the higher brain functions and turns people into savage creatures, has taken over the world. The game’s story was its strongest apect as it showed the lives of these people whose entire existence has crumbled to nothing.

The game went on to receiving 195 nominations across various publications and award cremonies. Of that 195, Naught Dog walked home with 122 awards, including being nominated for seven awards at the Spike VGX 2013, where the game took home four of the prizes. The Last of Us still stands as the most awarded game in history.
