Starting with a couple of honorable mentions, check out the Twinfinite’s Staff picks for our best games of May 2017 which includes of course, our Game of the Month!
Senior Editor Chris Jecks: The Walking Dead: A New Frontier finally came to an end this month in its fifth and final episode, and what a finale it was. Blending action, adventure, and character relationships together, the finale stands as an enjoyable story on its own, while also providing the necessary closure for the series.
A New Frontier’s finale is superbly written, allowing characters to truly come into their own, and those tough decisions you completely forgot about from earlier episodes to come back to bite you in the ass without ever feeling forced. Whether it’s Clem reminding you of a dumb decision you made, or the smaller comments or actions that characters make, it’s clear in the finale that all of your choices are finally coming into play.
By the time the credits roll on A New Frontier, fans will have much of the closure that they’ve been seeking throughout the series, while leaving the door open for the next chapter. It’s a shame that Telltale’s series’ struggled with technical hitches, and rely on incredibly obvious McGuffins in order to nullify some of the decisions that players make, but episode five most certainly did the series justice.
The Best Games of May 2017
Honorable Mention: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Read the Review!
Associate Editor Hayes Madsen: The Fire Emblem series has used a pretty tried-and -true formula for years now, with things like the weapon triangle becoming mainstays. Occasionally, titles will deviate from the norm, but none are quite as different as Fire Emblem Gaiden released in 1992. This is more evident than ever with the remake Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, which really feels like a breath of fresh air for the series by daring to be different.
Shadows of Valentia completely does away with the weapon triangle, instead opting for a combat system entirely based around stats. This is only one of many differences, however, as the game also has fully-explorable dungeons and towns. At the same time, all story scenes in Echoes are completely voiced, really helping to boost the presentation and personalities of the characters.
All of the changes in Fire Emblem Echoes really do help give the game a unique personality entirely its own, with a better story presentation than even Awakening or Fates, even if some of the story beats feel dated. It’s even more impressive to see a 25 year old game make a return in such a big way, especially considering fans in the west never got to experience the original. Hopefully, Nintendo chooses to continue down the road they’ve set up with Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, putting a little bit of experimentation into their next few titles.
The Best Game of May 2017: Injustice 2
Read the Review!
Staff Writer Taylor Danielle: During a time when the fighting game community was seeing a bit of a drought (so much so that many players quietly tiptoed over to For Honor as the next best thing), Injustice 2 emerged as a true hero. And we’re not just saying that because of its exceptional roster of DC heroes and villains. Injustice 2 truly and sincerely feels like the end result of developers spending more than three years eyeing Injustice: Gods Among Us with the sole purpose of discovering what has to go, what needs to stay and what is missing entirely.
The introduction of new mechanics like meter-burning air escapes and evasive rolls are small tweaks that truly change the dynamic of battle in a wonderful way and the sheer amount of possible juggle combos is enough to have you feeling like you’re in a fighting game player’s paradise. While many fighting games tend to find a particular area of excellence—whether it be fun cinematics, stellar mechanics or the best character roster around—Injustice 2 proves to be a master of many trades.
The Injustice game we all know and love move made a bold return with a new entry packed with tons of content for both multiplayer and single player game modes. Injustice 2 has a lot to offer right out the box and will easily captivate you for hours whether you consider yourself a fighting game player or not—and that kind of widespread appeal is perhaps one of Injustice 2’s most incredible achievements.

That does it for our May 2017 Game of the Month. Congratulations to Injustice 2! What do you think were the best games from last month? Let us know in the comments.
