Map Changes
Easily the most notable changes that have been introduced in Fortnite Battle Royale’s Season 4 are those that have been made to the map. While the comet that lurked above the map didn’t actually hit Tilted Towers, it did hit somewhere.
Dusty Depot has met its fate and has largely been replaced by the new Dusty Divot. This is the main crash site of the large comet that could be seen in the sky, and the crash site certainly has a sci-fi feel, with white, futuristic-looking buildings surrounding the comet itself.
Elsewhere, the aftermath of the meteor strike can be seen across the map. The prison next to Moisty Mire in the southeast corner of the map has largely been obliterated, leaving the corner towers and parts of structures still standing. These craters can be seen across the map. Tilted Towers has also been hit, but still largely remains intact, and you’ll see smaller crash sites dotted everywhere from Loot Lake to Haunted Hills.
There’s also a secret nuke bunker of sorts on a mountain to the east of Snobby Shores well worth checking out. The next big event, possibly?
Finally, there’s another newly named location in the form of Risky Reels in the very northeast corner of the map. It’s actually a fairly small named location compared to the likes of Flush Factory or Tilted Towers in Fortnite Battle Royale. You’ll find yet another crater in the middle, with a ton of cars, lorries, and a bunch of Hop Rocks surrounding it (more on those later). It’s a neat new area, but it’ll be pretty busy until the hype dies down, so if you want to survive, you may want to avoid it for now.
New Battle Pass Theme & Challenges
Each season of Fortnite has a specific theme that many of its cosmetics are based around, and Season 4 has a superhero theme. Where Season 3’s space theme ended with a meteor crash and the aforementioned changes to the map, Season 4’s superhero theme seems to be currently just related to the cosmetics you unlock in the Battle Pass.
It’s worth noting at this point, however, that Season 3’s comet/ meteor business only really came into effect midway through the season, so if Season 4 is to have a similar event, we just might not know anything about it yet.
Of course, with a new Battle Pass comes new weekly challenge lists. While these seem to be working in the same way as previous seasons, there are some new challenge lists in the form of Carbide and Blockbuster. By completing the challenges in these, players can earn even more cosmetics, though they won’t earn Battle Stars.
Hop Rocks
We told you we’d get back round to those Hop Rocks. If you’ve been to Dusty Divot or Risky Reels, or one of the other craters around the map, you may have spotted some glowing rocks in the surrounding area. These are Hop Rocks and offer a power-up of sorts to players once consumed. By interacting with them, players can get a temporary boost that allows for low gravity jumping. This can be particularly handy for getting out of somewhere in a hurry, or for just trying to reach the roof of a building with some loot on it.
Whether or not Hop Rocks are the first of more power-up items to hit Fortnite Battle Royale currently remains to be seen. However, with a superhero theme for Season 4, it certainly isn’t out of the question.
New Cosmetics
It should go without saying that Season 4 of Fortnite, of course, brings with it new cosmetics. That’s not just the ones that players will be able to get their hands on in the Battle Pass, but Epic Games looks set to continue to release new skins and cosmetics that aren’t necessarily tied to the superhero theme throughout the season.
A recent leak suggests that Battle Royale players will get a bunch of new axes, skins, and gliders in the next couple of weeks, so if you’re a cosmetics fiend in Fortnite, the future’s looking bright.
Minor Changes
The start of Season 4 in Fortnite also means that the usual weekly downtime and maintenance has also occurred. Epic Games has been exceptional at keeping on top of bugs and issues raised by the community, and its weekly updates and maintenance have allowed them to constantly tweak things until they find the perfect balance. Season 4’s patch notes continue this trend. The unpopular Crossbow has now been vaulted, the rocket launcher aim reticle is now a fixed size regardless of player movement, and headshots are now prioritized when body shots are in the way.
That’s just a few of the changes that have come as part of the patch notes for Season 4, but it’s worth noting that the Leaderboards will have also been reset. If you want to claim bragging rights over your friends in Fortnite, you’ll want to get an early start for that all-important lead.
