CUPHEAD

Cuphead is a gorgeous, hand-animated side-scroller that released this month for both Xbox One and PC. Its development first began in 2010, and the game’s art style mimics the old-school animation techniques of the 1930s. It was highly anticipated the last couple years, and finally released at the end of this month on Sept. 29.

Although the entire game can be played in single-player, there is also a co-op mode available where player two can play as protagonist Cuphead’s brother Mugman. The levels are broken into three types: run and gun where you progress like a normal side-scroller, boss battles, and a combination of both when boss battles feature several platforms to traverse around the level while you try and take them down.

Sometimes having a buddy to play as Mugman can come as an advantage, but other times it can clutter the screen and make it harder to figure out where to dodge and shoot with two player frantically jumping around the levels. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a fun yet challenging game to play with a friend, Cuphead is the perfect title to spend some hours on together.

Hopefully in the future it will come to PS4 too so the Sony fans can enjoy it as well.

DESTINY 2

The highly anticipated sequel to the original multiplayer FPS Destiny finally released this month, and both past and new fans of the series have tons of new content to work through alone or together in a group.

As Guardians, it’s up to you to defeat the emperor Dominus Ghaul and take back the Last City from his Red Legion army. In Desitiny activities are either PvE or PvP, and there are also options for six-player raids and three player “strike” missions as well. The PvP activities are all four versus four teams, which is a change from the original 2014 Destiny that also had two versus two, three versus three, and six versus six options.

So whether you are just exploring the expansive worlds and doing normal story mission with your buddies, teaming up for strikes and raids, or going head-to-head in deathmatch PvE modes, Destiny 2 offers numerous ways to play online with friends. Destiny 2 released for Xbox One and PS4 on Sept. 6, and is coming to PC later this month on Oct. 24.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

We can’t forget fighting games for September 2017’s best multiplayer games. Last month we saw the release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, the sixth entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom series.

Unlike previous titles in the series that featured three versus three fights, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has two versus two fights and a new combo system has replaced the previous character assists. This means that you can rapidly switch between characters on screen, and combine their combos for even more devastating blows.

In online multiplayer you can fight in ranked or causal games, host up to eight players in a lobby, or climb the global leaderboards. Unfortunately, there is no couch co-op included, meaning you and a friend couldn’t rise through the ranks together using the new two versus two battle system.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite released for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on Sept. 19.

PROJECT CARS 2

Project Cars 2

Project CARS 2 is a racing simulation game that not only released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but has a VR version as well that functions with both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with 12K resolution.

You can play through the single-player mode, or do some matchmaking to climb through the online ranking system or complete in online championships. There are public, friend, and private lobbies, so you can choose exactly who you want to race against. Up to 16 players can join a lobby on the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game, with PC players being able to have up to 32 racers at a time.

Project CARS 2 released for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on Sept. 22.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

After the success of Divinity: Original Sin in 2014, its sequel released last month to very positive reviews. It features turn-based combat with four different difficult modes as you embark on a quest to destroy Bishop Alexandar the Innocent.

After choosing your own character’s race, origins, and stats, you can assign up to three companions to their aid during their quest. In single-player they stay as NPCs, but they can also become playable characters in multiplayer modes, meaning you and three friends can take up the quest together.

Along with a multiplayer mainline story, the game also has a competitive multiplayer mode where teams can fight in an arena map against other players and NPCs.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has been in early access since September 2016, and released fully on Sept. 14 of this year. It is only available on PC.
