Choose Guided Mode

When you first begin your journey in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you’ll get to choose between playing in Guided or Exploration Mode. Guided Mode is exactly like previous Assassin’s Creed games. You’ll get a new quest, and the game will give you a quest marker or waypoint you can track easily. However, with Exploration Mode, you’ll need to figure out some locations for yourself. For instance, an NPC will let you know that your target is to the north of a certain forest. You’ll then need to check your map, find the forest, and head north of there. The idea here is to get the player to explore the world a little more, so that you don’t feel like you’re just following waypoints.

However, Exploration Mode doesn’t really develop beyond that. I played most of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in Exploration Mode before finally switching over to Guided Mode towards the end of the game. Since the game always gives you enough clues to figure out where you’re supposed to go, it becomes a bit of a hassle to waste extra time looking for that location on the map, then heading there. Since the game will prompt you whenever you’re near your target anyway, and Ikaros can pinpoint the location for you, you might as well just stick with Guided Mode.

Mess Around With Photo Mode

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey comes with a pretty neat photo mode, as expected of most AAA games releasing these days. Once you get into the game properly, you’ll quickly realize that Kephallonia is quite the scenic spot, and it’s a great place to mess around with the in-game photo mode a little. Head to the options menu, and make sure you’ve got photo mode enabled. When you’re in-game, press the L3 and R3 buttons together to activate it, and you’ll be able to start taking pretty pictures.

Just like in Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey lets you manipulate the camera however you want. You’ll be able to get some pretty neat angles this way, and capture some stunning photos of Ancient Greece throughout your journey. Not only that, you can share your photos through the online server. You can also check your map to see other popular photo spots, and view photos taken by other players who are also playing the game. The main draw of the Assassin’s Creed series is being able to explore historical time periods and iconic locations, so why not take some photos to create a bit of a travelogue?

Take Out Your First Mercenary

At the start of the game, you’ll have a mission to work on. One of the side objectives tasks you with taking out a mercenary before you go for your main target. Once you’ve gotten a few levels on you, you should definitely go for the mercenary first. There are a couple of reasons for this: you’ll activate a new side quest that leads you to the Arena, which is where you can test your mettle against even tougher fighters. Taking out the mercenary will also make the final encounter on Kephallonia a lot easier when you progress through the quest.

And lastly, killing mercenaries in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a good way to get some high-level gear quickly. It’s rare to find Legendary items from mercenaries, but purple gear is pretty good too.

Choose Your Horse

Also near the very beginning of the game, Markos will allow you to get a horse for easier travel through Kephallonia. Don’t forget to get your horse before leaving. And also, don’t worry too much about choosing the ‘best’ horse to start off your journey. There’s not much of a difference between the horses, and they’ll all get the job done.

The nice thing about horses in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is that they can climb mountains and uneven terrain pretty easily. In addition to that, you can also loot items off the ground while riding a horse, so there’s really no reason not to use a horse every chance you get. If, for some reason, you don’t really like the horse you chose at the start of the game, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is full of other horses you can ride too. You can’t keep them permanently, but at least you’ve got options.
