Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s Map Compared to 10 Other Games in the Series

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Assassin’s Creed used to be about exploring ancient cities, but now it’s about entire civilizations. Where we were once climbing across the rooftops of ancient Acre, we’re now sailing entire seas. Odyssey is the latest title in the series, and it’s combining the best aspects of two beloved games in last year’s Origins and the ever-popular Black Flag. There are huge expanses of land as well as massive bodies of water to explore. That all equates an absolutely gorgeous rendition of the Ancient Greek Islands and its rich culture. It also makes for an open world of breathtaking scale. We’ve already measured the map and compared it to Greece itself, but how does Odyssey measure in comparison to other Assassin’s Creed games?

The Biggest Maps in Assassin’s Creed:

  • Odyssey: 90.7 mile²
  • AC 4: Black Flag: 90.2 mile²
  • Origins: 31.6 mile²
  • Rogue: 27 mile²
  • Black Flag: Freedom Cry: 11.6 mile²
  • AC 3: 1.53 mile² (all cities & areas combined)
  • Syndicate – 1.4 mile²
  • Unity – 1.06 mile²
  • AC  2: 0.83 mile² (all cities & areas combined)
  • Brotherhood: 0.82 mile² (all cities & areas combined)
  • Assassin’s Creed: 0.4 mile² (all cities combined)

Although I measured some of the maps myself, credit must go to Senningrini_GR for his work compiling data on Assassin’s Creed map sizes over the years. Below you can find some absolutely brilliant images he made, first comparing city sizes, and then comparing the largest city (Paris) to Black Flag’s huge map, which is roughly the same size as Odyssey’s.

As with every map measurement we’ve made here, do keep in mind that although Ubisoft use ‘m’ to represent meters, we don’t actually know if the scale they use in-game is comparable to what a meter actually measures in real life. For example, when Alexios walks forward, he ticks down the ‘m’ very quickly indeed. Is that because he’s moving much faster in-game than one would in real life, or is it because an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey meter is much closer to a foot in real life? We can’t be sure. Bottom line: we’ve measured these as accurately as possible, but they’re not to be taken as 100% certainty.

We’ve actually compiled a list of 22 of gaming’s biggest open world maps from a variety of video game series, if you’re interested.
