Shulk, Super Smash Bros.

Xenoblade Chronicles was a major hit on the Wii, and while it wasn’t as notable as the other Nintendo franchises, it left a big mark on the role-playing genre with its compelling narrative and unique gameplay. Despite its fame, the series was left pretty much untouched until Shulk joined the Super Smash Bros. 4 main roster. He came with a flexible play style, wielding the Monado and changing his fighting style on a whim. Not to mention, Shulk’s addition to the game also helped breathe life into the series, spurring a remake on the 3DS, a spinoff on the Wii U, and even a sequel on the Nintendo Switch.

With the Xenoblade series now on the rise, Nintendo could be keen on keeping the franchise in Super Smash Bros. Rex and Pyra, however, seem more than likely to represent the series this time around, especially since series director Masahiro Sakurai had some good things to say about the sequel. That said, we’d still love to see Shulk make a comeback. He’s sitting pretty on the top of the tier list, and his moveset is definitely a step up from some of the other fighters in the game.

Greninja

Greninja, Super Smash Bros

It’s no surprise that Greninja made it to Super Smash Bros. – the ‘mon took the top spot in a major Japanese poll, after all. Who wouldn’t want a badass ninja frog on their Pokemon team? As a Super Smash Bros. character, Greninja started out as a pretty balanced fighter before slowly getting nerfed to the point where it became a meme. Still, the ‘mon still seems to be a pretty decent pick and is probably still a popular fighter for the Pokemon fans.

With a new Smash game on the way, the developers might shuffle the Pokemon roster again to bring in some new fighters to the mix. While Greninja is still adored by many fans, Decidueye has been slowly stealing the spotlight since its debut in Sun and Moon. In fact, the owl Pokemon has even scored a slot as a playable fighter in Pokken. ‘Mons like Pikachu and Jigglypuff have been staple fighters in Smash, but newcomers like Greninja won’t always get to keep their place as a playable character.

Corrin

With five characters from the series, Fire Emblem is one of the most heavily-represented franchises in Super Smash Bros. Corrin, the protagonist of Fates, was added in the game as downloadable content before his game even launched. While this move might have just seemed like a blown-up advertisement, Corrin turned out to be a pretty solid fighter with his strong zoning skills.

With a new Fire Emblem game in the works, Nintendo could pull off a similar scheme again. That said, this could mean that Corrin might have to give up his slot for an upcoming new character. Awakening and Fates have had plenty of time to shine in the spotlight, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they pull out Robin as well. Corrin definitely plays much better compared to the other Fire Emblem reps, especially since he has a decent spot in the meta, so it’ll be a bittersweet goodbye if ever it comes down to that.

Cloud

Cloud, Smash Bros, Final Fantasy, FF7, FFVII

It was a long time coming, but Nintendo actually managed to score the Cloud Strife for Super Smash Bros. This Final Fantasy icon finally earned a spot to fight against some of the biggest mascots in the gaming scene, and he sure knows how to pull his weight. Not only is he one of the most popular heroes in the game, the SOLDIER ranks as an A-list fighter in the meta.

Sadly, all good things usually come to an end, and there could be a chance that Cloud won’t be returning in the next game. Cloud only appears in the game as a DLC character, meaning he wasn’t actually part of the core roster to begin with. On top of that, Square Enix or Nintendo could choose to replace him with an entirely different character, such as Noctis or Sora, depending on their agreements.

Wii Fit Trainer

These days, you never really know just what Sakurai is thinking when it comes down to the Smash roster. Most people would usually expect (and want) characters from their favorite franchises, so when Nintendo announced the Wii Fit Trainer, it probably boggled most of the fanbase. The Wii Fit “programs” are games more than they are definitive characters. Yet its inclusion actually ended up working brilliantly, and we don’t want to see it vanish from the roster.

What makes this character so special is that she’s the closest thing to representing a console. While we (probably) won’t have a playable 3DS or Nintendo Switch, the closest thing we can ever get are the characters that symbolize them, such as Nikki from Swapnote or even Karen from that reveal trailer. As it stands, however, the Wii Fit Trainer isn’t exactly a must-pick fighter. She actually sits at the bottom end of the meta. Not to mention, with both the Wii and Wii U nearing the end of their lifespan, there doesn’t seem to be any real reason to keep the Wii Fit Trainer in Smash. Here’s hoping we get Amelia on board in the next game.
