You Can Leave Items on the Ground
Even if you’ve played all of the classic Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 0 may still throw you for a loop when you find out that there are no magical inventory boxes in this one. That means you’ll have to rely on your item management skills and make sure you always have space for whatever key items you might find later on, and also be sure not to pick up too many healing items that you may not need right away.
However, you should also be aware that Resident Evil 0 does allow you to leave items on the ground. If you go into your menu, you’ll realize that there’s no ‘Discard’ option for items. Instead, you’ll be able to leave items on the ground and come back to pick them up later. So if you leave all your healing items in the save room, think of the room itself as a giant inventory box. However, do note that each room has an item limit too.
Check Your Map to Keep Track of Items
Can’t remember where you left that damn Hookshot? Bring up your map with the R2 button and you’ll see various colored dots on it. These dots represent the items you’ve been leaving on the ground. There is also a tab at the bottom of the screen that allows you to go between categories such as ‘Ammo’ and ‘Key Items’ in case you’re searching for something specific.
I advise using one room for healing items, another room for key items, and a third for weapons. This will allow you to avoid unnecessary clutter and confusion whenever you need to rush back to the save room to grab something.
Be Aware of Your Partner’s Abilities
As stated in the beginning of the game, both Billy and Rebecca have their own unique skillsets. Rebecca can mix herbs, but Billy can move heavy objects. You’ll also need to be aware of whether your partner is in ‘Team’ or ‘Solo’ mode. If you select ‘Solo’ mode, your partner will act independently of you. On the other hand, ‘Team’ mode will allow your partner to stick with you at all times.
Another good thing to note is that if you exit a room while in ‘Team’ mode, your partner will automatically join you in the next area even if he or she was all the way at the other end of the room for some reason. The only exception to this is if your partner was under attack by a zombie. In which case, you’ll have to save your partner from danger or risk getting a Game Over if he or she dies.
That said, the AI in Resident Evil 0 is surprisingly solid, so you really only have to worry about their safety if they happen to be low on health.
Know How to Fight Your Enemies
You have control over two capable fighters in Resident Evil 0. This means that it might be a better idea to shoot and kill all the zombies in sight. It’s already hard enough to dodge attacks as it is, and with two people, the chances of someone getting caught in a nasty zombie embrace will be higher. Instead to taking a blow to your health level, it might be safer to clear out a room of regular zombies instead of running past them.
The leech men are a new enemy type in Resident Evil 0, and they may seem terrifying at first, especially since your bullets don’t deal as much damage to them. The trick to fighting them is to use fire. If you have a grenade launcher and some flame rounds, these leech men will go down pretty quick. I also recommend using molotovs against them.
Split Rebecca and Billy Up
This tip is more for the veteran players who enjoy the thrill of exploring a large, scary mansion alone. Rebecca and Billy don’t always have to be joined at the hip once you get to the mansion. In fact, if you’re playing on Hard difficulty, it might be more efficient to scout the area alone and look for the next puzzle to solve. As I mentioned previously, it is much harder to dodge zombies with two characters, so going it alone will be a much more efficient method if you’re trying to conserve ammo.
Once you’ve hit a roadblock with one character, take that opportunity to play as the secondary character and see if he or she can do anything to contribute to your overall progress.
