Oninaki

Oninaki is the third PS4 title from Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory, the makers of I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear. While those two titles did everything they could to pay homage to classic RPGs, Oninaki looks like it could be the studio’s first truly unique title.
Oninaki takes place in a world where death has become a nonstarter, since reincarnation is the basis of society. You play as Kagachi, a Watcher who’s duty it is to send the souls of the dead into the next life.
While I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphere used a turn-based system, Oninaki if a full-blown action RPG, with multiple playable characters. On top of basic abilities and equipment, you’ll be able to outfit your character with unique characters known as “Daemons,” who will enhance your skills and open up brand new attacks.
With absolutely gorgeous art design and another seemingly memorable soundtrack, it looks like Oninaki could be Tokyo RPG Factory’s chance to knock it out of the park. If you want to try it out early, there’s even a demo for PS4 up on the PSN.
RAD

Double Fine has, time and again, proven themselves the master of strange and quirky little games, and RAD is simply the next step in that legacy. RAD is a procedurally generated rogue-like that casts you as a teenager surviving the post-post-apocalypse, meaning the world has done and ended twice over.
You’ll have plenty of guns and tools to help you in the dangerous wilds, but in order for the teenagers of RAD to really survive they’ll need to use wild mutations. These mutations tie directly into the gameplay of RAD, enhancing your abilities or opening up entirely new powers to use.
For example, you can replace your head with a Cobra that’ll strike nearby enemies, then gaining the ability to lay eggs and hatch other weird cobra-hybrids. RAD also sports a unique neon-infused 80s aesthetic, making it feel distinctly unique from the rest of the rogue-like games out there.
No one out there makes games quite like Double Fine, and hopefully RAD can be another instant hit on the PS4,
Control

Remedy is one of the most storied developers out there, responsible for cult classics like Max Payne and Alan Wake. Control looks like it could be Remedy’s most ambitious game to date, and one that really doubles down on the supernatural elements they love to play around with.
You play as Jesse Faden, an agent for the United State’s Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a fictional agency whose goal it is to contain, study, and harness objects that deny scientific explanation. As Jesse arrives that the FBC’s most secure locations, The Oldest House, she finds it under attack by a supernatural entity known as The Hiss.
Control is a third-person shooter on its face, but the exploration in the game basically makes it a Metroidvania. Jesse has to explore the Oldest House and figure out what’s going on, all while encountering countless unexplained items and phenomena. As you go, you’ll unlock new abilities and powers that make you deadlier in combat, and open up access to other areas.
Control’s combat takes ideas set up in Quantum Break and doubles down on them, letting you use a variety of different powers to decimate enemies. By all regards, Control looks like it could be one of the sleeper hits of 2019 for PS4, and one of the best Remedy games yet.
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan

The second horror experience on PS4 in August is Man of Medan, the first in Supermassive Games’ new horror anthology series, The Dark Pictures. Man of Medan takes serious inspiration from Supermassive’s previous smash-hit, Until Dawn, creating a similar choice-based experience.
A young group of friends decides to travel to the South Pacific Ocean for vacation, but as a deadly storm approaches at sea, the group finds themselves stuck aboard a sunken, cursed ghost ship.
Man of Medan uses the same gameplay style as Until Dawn, with third-person exploration interspersed with quick-time events and dialogue decisions.
You control all five of the friends, and it’s possible to have all of the characters survive, as well as have all of them die. As you explore the ghost ship, you can find various “Dark Pictures” that give hints as to what might happen in the future.
Supermassive proved their mastery of the horror genre with Until Dawn, and since then fans have been dying for even more. Hopefully, Man of Medan is a bold first step into the interesting anthology.
