How to Do Codec Calls in Smash Bros Ultimate
Smash is packed with all sorts of easter eggs that are fun to unlock. In Snake’s case, you can tune in on some interesting conversations between the spy and his colleagues. If you want to listen to their witty conversations, here’s how to do codec calls in Smash Bros Ultimate.
- Play as Snake
- Pick the Shadow Moses Island map on normal mode
- Tap the down emote fast
These codec calls actually aren’t new to the series, having first appeared in Brawl on the Wii. Here, you can listen to the Metal Gear cast talk about each Smash character and share their thoughts. With Snake finally back in Smash Bros Ultimate, fans can finally listen to all of these voice clips again.
In order to pull this easter egg off, you’ll need to do a few things first. It’s worth noting that you can listen in on the codec calls whether you’re facing a human or AI opponents, regardless of what mode you’re playing.
However, you will need to go to the Shadow Moses Island level and make sure you pick the normal mode. Finally, make sure you have Snake as your assigned character. If you aren’t using him or haven’t unlocked him yet, you won’t be able to pull off the codec calls in Smash Bros Ultimate.
Once you’ve managed to fulfill these requirements, simply face your opponent and use the down taunt, which should be the down button on your left Joy Con. You’ll need to pull this off extremely quickly, as it won’t work if you simply press it. What you can do is place your thumb right above the down button and swiftly slide it down to pull off the codec calls.
If successful, you’ll see Snake kneel down and put his head on his head. He’ll then talk to either Colonel Campbell, Octacon, or Mei Lang depending on which character you’re facing.

We’ve gotten tons of new characters since Smash Brawl on the Wii, so some fans might be wondering if Nintendo added in a few new of these witty conversations in the game. Unfortunately, they hadn’t touched it since, meaning these calls will only work on Brawl characters.
