Bandai Namco has released the first video in a series called “Swords and Souls: The Rise of SoulCalibur.” The mini-documentary is produced by Bandai Namco themselves and chronicles how the SoulCalibur series rose to prominence within the fighting game community. Specifically, the documentary seems to be about the impact it had on fighting game fans, rather than the actual development of the game.
The video loops in the experiences of well-known content creators. In the first part we get to hear from Markman the brand and community advisor for Tekken, player/commentator Aris, streamer/producer Maximilian, and the EVO 2018 finalist Kayane. Each one talks about their involvement with SoulCalibur and how they’ve seen it evolve over the years. Spliced in is gameplay from across the series, starting all the way back from Soul Edge.
This is, of course, leading up to the release of SoulCalibur VI, which introduces the new guest character of Geralt from The Witcher. A new system called Reversal Edge is also implemented, letting you defend against an attack and then instantly launch one back at your opponent. You can take a look at the full part 1 of Swords and Souls down below.
SoulCalibur VI launches on Oct. 19 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If you missed it, you can take a look at one of the game’s latest trailers from GamesCom detailing the second story mode and character creation. You can also check out our hands-on impressions of SoulCalibur VI from earlier this year.
