5 Best Games of August 2018, According to Metacritic
5) Monster Hunter: World (PC) – Metacritic Score: 88

Monster Hunter: World is one of the biggest selling and highest rated games of 2018 so far, having come to consoles back in January, but it finally released on PC earlier in the month, and it’s still a great experience. Just as in the previous Monster Hunter games, World sees you take on the role of a hunter who travels to a new continent to take on threatening monsters.
With the story, gameplay, and tutorials improving dramatically over previous entries, Monster Hunter: World is one of the most accessible entries in the series. Most of the deep upgrade and gear systems remain and will confuse some players, but it’s compelling enough for you to want to understand everything that is in front of you. You get a real sense of achievement from taking down the tougher monsters alongside your friends and the upgrade system is rewarding.

4) Okami HD (Switch) – Metacritic Score: 89

The cult classic action-adventure game, Okami, was remastered and released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in December 2017 as Okami HD. The remastered version has now released for Nintendo Switch, and it sees you take control of the mythical sun goddess, Amaterasu, in the form of a wolf, and restore color to the world by destroying the monsters that have stolen it.
Just as they did for the console remaster, critics have praised the beautiful visuals and impeccably designed world, but the color looks so vibrant on the Switch’s small screen. The brush-based gameplay has aged well and compliments the other excellent mechanics and level design. It remains largely the same, gameplay wise, but it’s perfect for taking on the go on Nintendo’s hybrid, especially if you missed out elsewhere.

3) Dead Cells – Average Metacritic Score: 89

Dead Cells been praised across the board for its seamless melding of roguelike and metroidvania elements. The compelling die, improve, try again loop that we’ve come to know from roguelikes both old and new is complemented perfectly by wonderfully satisfying combat and traversal. The combat is deep, challenging, and requires tactical thought as well as quick reactions, while the movement is forgiving enough that you’ll soon be racing through stages, swiping at enemies as you go. It’s one of the best examples of the genre in recent memory and it’s very difficult to put down. Dead Cells is great everywhere, but the “just one more run” feeling is more pronounced on the go with the Switch version.

2) Into the Breach (Switch) – Metacritic Score: 92

Towards the end of August 2018, Nintendo revealed a surprise Nindies direct, and the shadow drop of Into the Breach was the classic ‘there’s one more thing’ moment at the end. From the studio behind the excellent FTL: Faster Than Light, Into the Breach is turn based strategy game that sees you fight a army of huge monsters. It’s tactical, complex, and interesting, but most importantly, you’re in command of giant mechs. It can be tough, but the short rounds and basic design makes it feel at home on the Switch. The satisfying feeling of overcoming the tougher fights is unrivaled, but even when you get stuck, it’s worth sticking with because it’s always clear how you can improve and have a better chance next time.

 1) Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition – Metacritic Score: 93

Just as it was when it came to PC in September of last year, Divinity: Original Sin II is the highest rated game of August 2018. It finally made its way to Xbox One and PS4 last month, and it’s as great as it ever was. If you’re unaware, it is an RPG with turn-based combat that is varied and fun. The quests are multi-faceted and give you countless way to approach them all.
You’ll know what to expect if you heard anything about the PC version last year, but critics across the board have praised it because it features an incredible story with tangible choices and consequences. The huge amount of content is well designed, and the plot is well written. For many, it’s considered to be among the best RPGs of the decade, and is certainly one of the most compelling experiences of the year.
