Infiltrate Under the Cloak of a Sand Storm
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has added tons of new mechanics and possibilities to the Metal Gear Solid universe simply by making it an open world game. Time of day, schedules, location and more now come into play as both obstacles and potential benefits. One of these additions comes in the form of Metal Gear Solid V‘s dynamic weather system, specifically the sandstorm.
The sandstorm dials visibility all the way down and eliminates the ability to hear approaching threats for the player. The upside is that enemies suffer the same restrictions that are placed on you. This changes the entire dynamic of Metal Gear Solid V: TPP. If you’re cautious enough, navigating the storm and picking off enemies as they walk right beside their own friends is extremely satisfying. Getting close to primary targets becomes easier (provided you tagged them before the storm), and you can even let your more powerful weapons loose if you want to be a little sloppy.
The only downside is that the Fulton Recover System is relatively useless, but the ability to play the game in a new way is more than worth it, so give it a try.Â
Go On A Reflex Frenzy
New to Metal Gear Solid V: TPP is Reflex Mode. What this does is allow players to take out an enemy that has spotted them before an alarm is set off. Playing the game without this mode on actually helps to net you a higher score, but it’s such a cool effect, and can be used strategically for players who really aren’t that good at stealth games.
Once you’re spotted, time slows to a crawl giving you about 5 seconds to get rid of everyone in front of you. You can melee, tranquilize, or kill, it’s entirely up to you. Chaining Reflex situations together makes for good videos, and is just a really fun way to see how badass Big Boss truly is.Â
Forward Operating Base Invasion
Metal Gear Solid V: TPP has the Mother Base that fans are undoubtedly familiar with, but it also has a separate, smaller base used solely for online play. This is your Forward Operating Base, and everyone is allowed to have one. You can infiltrate the bases of friends and strangers alike so that you can steal resources and brag about how you’re the best soldier out there.
You can defend your base personally if you happen to be online, and your friends can do so for you if you aren’t (if nobody is available, then AI will handle the heavy lifting). Revenge can be taken on players as long as they are spotted at least once during infiltration, allowing players to retake what was lost. It’s a pretty awesome scenario that puts two Big Bosses against one another in a battle for supremacy.
The fact that the Defender and Attacker have different experiences is great as well, since it provides more of an incentive to play both sides. One thing to keep in mind is that the FOBs aren’t available right from the very beginning. You must progress through the story before you’ll be able to build and customize this base in Metal Gear Solid V: TPP.Â
Strategic Supply Drops
You know how you can now call things into the field in Metal Gear Solid V: TPP? These can be weapons, ammo, vehicles, whatever it is that you may need in the middle of an adventure. It’s an amazing feature that really helps to sell the whole “amazing soldier with his own secret base of soldiers” thing. Wouldn’t it be great if you can also have death delivered? And I don’t mean in a “I got the best gun I owned” kind of way, I mean you call and something dies once the delivery comes in (or at least gets knocked out).
Supply drops in Metal Gear Solid V: TPP can do just that if you have great aim and impeccable timing. Call in a supply of ammunition and watch as the huge box is dropped right onto some unsuspecting soldiers. It’s a new addition to the series that we wish was there since day one. But better late than never, right?
Oh, and if you need some practice in getting your package aim just right, why not try this method out on D-Horse? She’s a champ and can totally take it.
