It’s Free
Ghost of Tsushima Legends is a totally free cooperative multiplayer experience that’s completely separate from the main single-player campaign; there are no microtransactions at all.
Of course, you will need to have PlayStation Plus and the base game purchased but what Sucker Punch has created here is so worth it.
There are four-player horde-style missions where you must survive dozens of waves of enemies without your team dying. There’s also a two-player story mode that plays similarly to the single-player story, in which you can stealth your way through most of the sequences with a buddy.
Communicating with a friend over voice chat in this mode is very neat as well. Being able to say, “Hey, you get the one on the left, and I’ll take the one on the right,” and then accurately perform the assassinations is always super satisfying.
There’s also a fairly deep customization/loot system, which we can go into next.
Tons of Customization Options
Oh man, if you were a fan at all of any of the customization options in the story mode of Ghost of Tsushima with Jin Sakai, just wait until you see all of the outfits that you can eventually unlock in Legends mode.
There are some creepy helmets and strange masks and all sorts of different color variations for your armor and color effects for your sword. And this isn’t even all of it!
I don’t think Ghost of Tsushima Legends is supposed to be a sort of game made for Halloween. Still, since it coincidentally released before the spooky festivities, it’s difficult to overlook the similarities.
You can essentially play as ghosts wearing these eerie costumes and annihilate a ton of people. There’s an ominous red-tinted glow over everything in the game, and it can certainly give off some Halloween vibes for sure.
And the loot system is rather deep without being super complex. You can equip a different weapon, ranged weapon, charm, and two ghost weapons, and you’ll receive higher-powered loot by completing missions and bonus objectives.
Your Chi level will then increase, allowing you to try out some tougher missions to grab some super rare gear. It’s like most other loot-based games, but it manages to work so well with the Ghost of Tsushima formula.
The Classes Are All Great
The Hunter, Assassin, Samurai, and Ronin are the four classes that you will eventually be able to unlock as you rank up in Ghost of Tsushima Legends.
Once you complete the shortish tutorial for each class, the game will then prompt you to choose one, and you’ll be stuck with them until you rank up a bit.
At first, I was disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to try out the other classes immediately, but it makes sense when you think about it. This way, you can really learn the ins and outs of your first chosen class, and then you can slowly learn the next one and then so on and so forth.
You can be experienced with all of their strengths and weaknesses and special abilities. For example, Ronin is the group’s healer, so he always comes in clutch when my group is down. The Hunter is very good with a bow; the assassin is great at, you know… assassinating, and the Samurai just packs a hell of a punch.
You really can’t go wrong with picking a class here because they’re all balanced and have their own things going for them. So, if you’ve yet to jump into Legends and you don’t know who to pick, just close your eyes and pick randomly, or go Samurai, since that’s the most similar to Jin Sakai.
Bonus!
I have to bring this up –I’m so sorry y’all. But you can pet the spirit dogs (and maybe the Bears too?) in Ghost of Tsushima Legends. You or your allies can summon the pets to aid you in battle, and they do a great job of not only protecting you but being adorable in the process.
You can pet them at any time to get some much-needed reassurance and cuddles, even during a combat scenario. Just be careful not to pet them for too long now; they’re here to fight for you, not to be coddled.
