You’re going to use this to hit trees and chop them down. A very important tool in the early game, as it will allow you to get materials to craft faster.

Crafting an Axe
When it comes to getting your hands on the first one, you’re going to want to head over to any workbench. This can be your own if you already have one, or Tom Nook’s DIY one.
Next, you’re going to want to hover over the recipe for Flimsy Axe.
This is the first one you can make. Obviously, it’s also the worst. But it will allow you to smack trees and get materials that way. You’re going to need to have five tree branches and one stone to make it.
Once you do, voila! You’ll have a tool for your collection. You’re able to bring it out using the d-pad whenever you’re ready to use it.
Press down on the d-pad, by the way, if you want to put it away.
Where to Buy One
If you’ve had it with making them for yourself, though, you can always just purchase an axe at the shop on the island.
Head on over to Nook’s Cranny and interact with their back cabinet to check out some deals on tools.
How to Upgrade Your Axe
You won’t always have to keep to the flimsy one, of course. You can also upgrade it to make it more durable. Which is great, who wants to keep crafting the same thing over and over?
To do so, you’ll first need to get the ‘Pretty Good Tools Recipes’ from the Nook Miles machine in the Residential Services building. It’ll cost you 3,000 Nook Miles to purchase.
Once you’ve got this, you’ll then be able to craft the Stone Axe. This requires you to have a Flimsy Axe and three wood to make. This will also allow you to get materials from rocks, so it’s well worth spending the wood on upgrading.
Sometimes, when you’re chopping down trees, wood won’t be the only thing you get! Time to get out there and explore what you’ll nab from deforestation. Hooray!
