Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight puts you in the tiny shoes of an adorable yet creepy little bug that finds itself stuck in a dark and grimy underground labyrinth that is teeming with dangerous bugs that are much bigger than you.

Hollow Knight, like Ori and the Blind Forest, draws inspiration from Metroid and Castlevania, but it is a much more difficult game than all of the above. It drops you into this atmospheric world with little to no directions and allows you to explore freely until you get a hang of what it is you’re supposed to do.

The hand-drawn art style is stunning and while the game has a darker tone than Ori, it still does a great job at sucking you into the bug-filled kingdom.

Also, the game is getting a sequel so if you like this one, you can get hype for the developers’ next title.

You can find Hollow Knight on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

Dead Cells

dead cells, update, corrupted

Dead Cells is a roguelike Metroidvania that punishes you greatly for dying on your run. But, once you get more and more experience in your gameplay sessions, you’ll be rewarded with more passive skills and access to stronger weapons and items.

I’ve yet to finish Dead Cells but man this game is just so engrossing and hard to put down once you get into the swing of things. The game controls perfectly, the soundtrack is excellent, and the risk/reward mechanic is so damn satisfying.

It’s a brilliant indie title that deserves way more attention than it already has. If you’re interested and enjoyed Ori and the Blind Forest, you can find it on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, and mobile devices.

Axiom Verge

Axiom, games, developer

Axiom Verge was one of the early Metroidvanias of this generation and you can say that it sparked a fire that led to other developers to iterate on the existing genre once again.

There’s no way to say it better than this, but Axiom Verge is a straight-up Metroid game but with a more sci-fi and futuristic twist to it. The different weapons that you acquire are really fun to use, the soundtrack is haunting, the bosses are creative, and it just does a good job at drawing inspiration but while also making it its own thing.

It was also recently revealed that a sequel is in the works so make sure to check it out if you like Ori and the Blind Forest.

Celeste

Anxiety can be hard to deal with and it can be your worst enemy that tells you that you’re not good enough and that you cannot accomplish what you desire. That’s what the narrative of Celeste attempts to tackle.

The game is a series of highly difficult platforming challenges that are presented in a beautiful pixel art style alongside some chill music tracks. And like I mentioned, you will die a lot in Celeste but the game does a good job of pushing you to try again and again, not making you feel bad for dying but instead encouraging you to get up and try again.

Getting to the top of the mountain is a goal and while Celeste isn’t a Metroidvania like Ori and the Blind Forest, the themes and visual aesthetics are very similar.

You can find Celeste on Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Metroid: Samus Returns

When you ask a Metroid fan about the best games in the franchise or just their favorite games in general, they’ll probably mention Super Metroid or the first Metroid Prime but you’ll never hear anyone talk about the Game Boy title, Metroid II: Return of Samus.

Due to the power of the Game Boy, this sequel didn’t push the series forward when it comes to visuals and the sound quality was quite poor. Thankfully, Nintendo released a full remake of this game on the 3DS a couple of years ago and it fixed pretty much all of the issues.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a return to form for the 2D sector of the franchise and is one of the last big first-party titles to be released on the 3DS.

You’ll notice that the backtracking and the way that you get more upgrades and items are similar to Ori and the Blind Forest and you probably won’t be crying during the intro of this game but it’s still very fun to play and is one of the best games in the series.
