How to Get Them

Back when Borderlands: The Handsome Collection was first released, players had many opportunities to get Golden Keys, thanks to Gearbox constantly giving out SHiFT codes on their social media channels. These days, though, it’s a little rarer.

First off, Golden Keys are tied to profiles. This means that all characters under one profile will share the same pool of Golden Keys, so use them wisely.

To get Golden Keys, you’ll want to sign up for Gearbox Software’s SHiFT service from the main menu. Simply click on the Extras option from the menu, choose SHiFT Code, and choose to sign up for the service.

After doing this, you should get a confirmation email, along with a new SHiFT code. Now head back to the Extras option from the main menu and enter the code that you just received in your inbox. This will allow you to redeem your Golden Key.

What Golden Keys are For

With these, you’ll now be able to unlock the special golden chest located in Sanctuary. This allows you to get a few bonus items and powerful fear. However, do note that the gear you receive from the chest is random, and it scales with your character level. Because of this, it’s usually better to wait until you’re at a higher level before opening the chest.

Once you open the chest, your Key will be gone permanently, so choose wisely when it comes to picking a character to open the chest, and keep their level in mind.
