Kirby’s fair-weather friend Meta Knight joins the fight alongside over 70 of gaming’s biggest icons in Smash Bros Ultimate. However, unlike the pink puffball, he isn’t available from the start. Here’s how to unlock Meta Knight in Smash Bros Ultimate.

There are multiple ways to unlock characters in Smash Bros Ultimate, and although the order of unlockable characters may seem random at first, there is definitely a method to the madness.

There is a way to quickly seek out specific characters that you wish to unlock. This is done by playing through Classic mode with certain characters.

In order to unlock Meta Knight through Smash Bros Ultimate’s Classic mode, you’re going to need to have unlocked several other characters first. Assuming you’ve only got the starting eight characters unlocked, here is the order of characters you’ll have to beat Classic mode with to get him:

  • Link
  • King K. Rool
  • Ice Climbers
  • Simon

Beating the mode as Link will unlock King K. Rool. Beating the mode with King K. Rool will unlock Ice Climbers, and so forth. Continue on this path until you’ve beaten the mode with Simon, and he will finally appear.

Now’s a good time to mention that if you lose the match against a new challenger, they can be fought again by going to “Challengers Approach” under the “Games & More” menu.

That’s the fastest and easiest way to unlock Meta Knight in Smash Bros Ultimate, but there are alternative methods.

Another way to unlock Meta Knight is by simply playing the Smash mode, either solo or with friends. The game counts the amount of button inputs, and as a certain threshold is passed, a new challenger will appear. The more friends playing, the more button inputs are registered. Therefore, it’s quicker to unlock characters if you’re playing with friends.

New characters will appear in a set order, starting with Ness. Meta Knight will be the 38th fighter to appear. It’ll definitely take longer to face him through this method, but it also gives you the opportunity to unlock tons of fighters along the way.

WARNING: World of Light spoilers below!

The last method to unlock Meta Knight, and by far the longest, is through the World of Light Adventure mode.

Meta Knight is found towards the end of World of Light, after defeating Galeem and entering the World of Dark. He is waiting in the Mysterious Dimension, which can be found along the path northward of the World of Dark entrance.

That’s all there is to know about how to unlock Meta Knight in Smash Bros Ultimate. For more tips and tricks on the game, be sure to check out our guide wiki.
