Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is the latest Wii U title to find itself ported over to Nintendo’s smash-hit success, the Switch. Players will guide Donkey Kong and co. through six different islands of side-scrolling goodness in an attempt to defeat the Snowmads trying to bring the world to a chill. Each of the different Kongs in the game has their own ability, and you can play through the entire story with up to three friends all playing on the same system.

Tropical Freeze also has a neat, newcomer-friendly system in the form of Funky Kong. This groovy monkey has more hearts and abilities than his counterparts, making the adventure that little bit easier for those less experienced platformer players.

Destiny 2: Warmind (Xbox One, PS4, PC – May 8)

Destiny 2’s had a pretty rough ride since its launch back in September. The community has oft found that the shared-world shooter doesn’t quite offer the end game experience that its predecessor did that managed to retain a large player base years after its release. Warmind brings a chunk of new content and improvements in the hope of remedying these issues that might just be enough to bring you Guardians back on-board.

Warmind will bring new story missions and quests centered around Ana Bray, Rasputin, and more. A new Patrol and Public Event will also come to the red planet, the latter of which has its own unique rewards to offer up. Add in new weapons and armor, new strikes, increased power and level caps, and a new Raid lair, and you’ve got a fair bit of new content to sink your teeth into.

Aside from that, Warmind also brings with it some Quality of Life changes in order to give it some additional staying power inside your system. The PvP Crucible will get a new ranking system, private matches will become a thing, and the Exotic weapons are getting a work over in order to make them feel worth the grind.

Laser League may not have ultra-realistic graphics or a story that goes on for hours and hours on end, but it does offer up a multiplayer experience sure to fuel your gaming rivalries with friends and family members. Each player takes control of a small neon-colored human, deploy harmful lasers of their color, and avoid the enemy lasers. It’s a simple premise, but one that can get incredibly hectic when the small arena begins to fill with multiple, spinning, neon lasers.

With up to 4 vs. 4 matches, Laser League has the potential to be an incredibly accessible and compelling party game. Keep your eyes peeled when it releases on May 10.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (Switch – May 18)

It’s not just Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze that gets the port treatment from the Wii U to the Switch in May 2018. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is a Zelda-themed Musou game that’ll have you slice your way through countless enemies and take on giant bosses in order to recruit allies from various Zelda timelines to help you fight against the soon-to-be-resurrected Ganon.

With all of the released DLC packs included in the Definitive Edition, Hyrule Warriors’ re-release on Switch may be worth your time even if you checked it out before on the Wii U. For any Legend of Zelda fans, this isn’t the full-fledged adventure you’re likely clamoring for following Breath of the Wild, but at least you can roam the world of Hyrule and soak up the atmosphere all the same.

State of Decay 2 (Xbox One, PC – May 22)

The Xbox One gets an exclusive all of its own in May 2018, in the form of Undead Labs’ State of Decay 2. The world has fallen into chaos, with civilization a husk of what it once was and the undead roaming the land feasting on any lucky enough to have survived this long. As you may have guessed then, your primary objective in State of Decay 2 is to simply survive.

That’s where it gets interesting, though. State of Decay 2 and its predecessor both have a perma-death feature at the core of the gameplay. If you take a survivor out scavenging and they’re mauled to death by the undead, they’re done for. Considering each character has their own unique abilities and traits, State of Decay 2 tasks you with managing your survivors so everyone’s doing the job that suits them best. All of this is in order for you to establish and develop a base of operations, so you can destroy the Plague Hearts and put the undead to rest for good.

State of Decay 2 largely offers up more of the same as its predecessor. However, its big appeal is its four-player co-op functionality, allowing you and three friends to go scavenging and slamming car doors in the faces of the undead together. What could sound more enjoyable? Nothing.

Dark Souls Remastered (Xbox One, PS4, PC – May 25)

If the phrase ‘Prepare to Die’ fills you with joy, then Dark Souls Remastered is probably a game you’re going to want to pick up in May 2018. Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, the remaster of this 2011 classic sees the original, challenging RPG action make a return to our screens with updated visuals at a buttery smooth 60FPS. Plus, you’ll get the Artorias of the Abyss DLC packed in there for free, too.

Dark Souls is one heck of a challenging series, but take the time to learn how to dance a blend of strikes and evades around each enemy’s attack pattern and you’ll find a rewarding experience with some of the best level design and fleshed out lore available right now. Just don’t expect this to be a walk in the park. You will die. Multiple times.

Detroit: Become Human (PS4 – May 25)

Detroit: Become Human is the latest title from director David Cage and the rest of the team at Quantic Dream. This narrative-driven adventure focuses on Detroit in 2038, which has become a thriving city thanks to its stature as a manufacturing hub for androids. The game follows the stories of three different androids which will intertwine at varying points throughout the narrative.

As you’d expect from a Quantic Dream game, Detroit also has a branching narrative, with the decisions you make throughout leading you to one of “dozens of endings.” It’s worth noting, however, if you weren’t a fan of the likes of Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls, you’re probably not going to enjoy Detroit: Become Human all that much. If its futuristic narrative and decision-making appeal to you, though, be sure to keep Detroit on your radar when it hits the PS4 on May 25.
