If you’re looking for a game that you can play with your friends that doesn’t require any of you to have badass shooting, driving, or sporting skills then Minecraft is more than likely the best co-op game you can do. Giving you a huge world to go and basically do as you wish, players can work together in an abundance of different ways that things will always stay fresh.

Heck, you don’t even have to work together when you’re playing in a small world. That’s what makes Minecraft such a great game to kick back and enjoy with a couple of friends. If you want to be slowly but surely build a giant castle as you all hunt for stone and other materials while you talk about the football or your most anticipated games, you can do that. Or, you can see who can dig to the bottom of the map the fastest. Minecraft is the perfect game to escape to another world with a couple of friends and forget about everything else.

Helldivers

helldivers, ps4, co-op

Helldivers is a twin-stick shooter that allows for four player co-op both locally and online. It also allows for cross-play between PS4 and Vita too meaning two of your friends can jump in on their handhelds while you shoot those aliens from the big screen. Helldivers tasks you and three friends to protect “Super Earth” where a democracy has blurred the lines between a military and government rule. In a universe where the war is being lost, you and your friends are the last line of defense against the three different invading enemy species.

Helldivers is the perfect game for groups of players who want to put their teamwork and shooting skills to the test. Not only are enemies tough and require some accurate shooting to take down, but you’ll also need the help of your friends to cover your back when reloading. Oh, and you’ll also need to be able to trust them not to shoot you in the face, what with friendly fire being enabled.

Broforce

Broforce, co-op, four player

BROFORCE is the game where you and three friends team up to protect the world and show how much you hate terrorism. As a team of militarists armed to the teeth, you’ll run and gun your way through a bunch of different levels eliminating the terrorist threat as you go. There’s also a bunch of weird and wonderful weaponry to keep things interesting too, as well as new missions and Bros every month so you’ll never run out of stuff to play.

Though the game has had a few technical difficulties on PS4, BROFORCE offers some retro 80s side-scrolling gameplay. If you’re looking for a more traditional co-op gaming affair, you may want to check this one out.

Rocket League

rocket league, co-op, four player

The undisputed champion of multiplayer from 2015 offered some of the most impressive displays of skill, and also some of the most fun we had playing together in a long time. It’s your ordinary game of soccer, except you have five minutes, you’re all in rocket-powered cars… and… well you’re playing soccer with cars! It’s just as chaotic as it sounds, trust me.

Though a lot of players tend to jump into Rocket League’s 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 modes, there’s also a 4 vs. 4 mode that allows you and three friends to take on another team online. Of course, if you’re wanting to keep the action locally, you can also play a four player split screen mode against the AI. But let’s be real, it’s way more satisfying when you score that incredible goal against another human.

Alienation

ps4, alienation

Whether you want to start from the very beginning of a mission, or you and your friends just never seem to all be able to get on at the right time, Alienation may be a good pick. Offering both four player local and online co-op, Alienation allows players to drop into your friends’ games instantly, rather than having to wait until they’re done with a level.

In Alienation, you’ll have to use a range of both human and Alien weaponry in order to eliminate the waves of Alien enemies in this twin-stick shooter. If you’re after a game that combines sheer fun and enjoyment, with slick visuals and an easy to join multiplayer, Alienation is a solid choice.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Borderlands is quite well known as one of those series that allows players to jump into their friends’ worlds and help them gun down all manner of Psychos and other enemies as they take down Handsome Jack and search for Vaults. The Handsome Collection combines two Borderlands adventures – Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – and brings them to the PS4 and Xbox One.

Not only does it also throw in all of the DLC from both of these games, but it allows for four player local co-op, and online too. No matter what way you like to play your co-op games, The Handsome Collection has a ton of content to keep you and your friends playing for quite some time.

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition

Combining both the base game and the expansion, Reaper of Souls, Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition came to PS4 and Xbox One back in 2014 and brought with it some of the most compelling four player local and online co-op gameplay you can get your hands on.

Choosing from a number of different classes, players must return to the town of Tristram to investigate rumors of a fallen star which symbolizes evil’s rebirth. With the hordes of enemies and the difficulty of the challenge scaling directly with the number of players in your party, Diablo 3 offers a challenging and rewarding loot-focused co-op experience.

Overcooked

Overcooked Feature

One of the most recently released games to feature four player co-op was Overcooked. While it lacks online co-op, Overcooked throws you and the rest of your friends and family into a kitchen, puts chef hats on your heads, and tasks you with preparing and cooking up a variety of different orders before customers come to complain. Of course, this isn’t quite as easy as it may sound when there’s a ton of different things that need doing and you’re all getting in each other’s way.

Overcooked is chaotic, fun, challenging, and charming and will have you swearing like Gordon Ramsey in no time. Though it’s basic premise may not sound like your cup of tea, it’s definitely worth giving it a try.

Dying Light

dying light

Dying Light is one of the most interesting takes on the zombie genre in recent years. Pairing the known common enemy with parkour traversal, and a deadly day-night mechanic, Dying Light will have you exploring a city in search of provisions and weapons to help you take down the hordes of zombies filling the streets. However, at night, you’ll want to avoid the streets even more, as zombies become stronger and swell in numbers even more.

As a co-op experience, Dying Light allows you and three others to make your way through the entire campaign as a group online. Unfortunately, there’s no local co-op in Dying Light. You’re able to explore the game’s huge open world, customize your characters, and complete missions as and when you see fit.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

call of duty

The Call of Duty series isn’t often associated with being a co-op experience, after all, many players focus their attention on the online multiplayer as they aim to rise through the ranks, unlock weapons, and prestige to the very top. However, Black Ops 3 offers players the ability to play multiplayer matches, and the zombies mode in four player local co-op. If your friends are online, however, you can play online multiplayer and the zombies mode in four player co-op too.

If you sometimes find it hard to get three friends together because of conflicting work schedules or whatever it may be, you can always play through Black Ops 3’s campaign in two player split-screen or online co-op, as well. Though Infinite Warfare is due out in a couple of months, if you’re itching for some Call of Duty co-op action now this is your best bet for busy servers and the best experience.
