More Variety in Maps and Modes
Overwatch is a ton of fun right now, but it can get pretty tiring to play the same modes and maps over and over again. Yes, pushing the payload is fun, but there are only so many times a person can get microwaved by Symmetra’s turrets on the Hanamura map before finally deciding to move on to something else. Right now, Overwatch’s game modes include Escort, Assault/Defense, and Hybrid. Considering that Hybrid is really just a mashup of the other two modes, Overwatch only has two proper game modes to keep people occupied.
Lucioball is a serious departure from the existing game modes, and it takes place on an entirely new map. Instead of shooting down your opponents and working together to capture a point, Lucioball tasks you with nudging an oversized soccer ball into a net in teams of three. It’s a lot different from the other versus modes available in Overwatch right now, and the game might just need that kind of diversity to keep people playing in the long run.
Get to Learn How to Play Lucio
This is highly subjective, of course, but Lucio is one of the best support heroes available in Overwatch right now. He’s fast and mobile, he’s great at AoE healing, he can get you back into the fight very quickly, and he has a gun that can blast enemies off the edge. He’s a very versatile support character, and if you’re looking to take on the support role in competitive matches, you’re going to want to learn to play as Lucio.
While Lucioball doesn’t give you access to all of his abilities, it’s still a pretty neat mode that gets you acquainted with his kit, as well as his mobility, which can seem a bit unwieldy for first-time players. Lucioball is the perfect game mode for players who want to learn how to use Lucio, and it’s definitely a lot more fun than just practicing with the game’s AI. Also, for those who don’t want to jump into Quick Play with a new character, Lucioball is a great way to ease you into his oversized shoes.
A Fun Break From the Competition
Ever since the competitive ranked mode got added into Overwatch, the game’s community has gotten a lot more serious, and more casual players might find it a little bit stifling. Considering that Quick Play mode essentially offers up the same game modes but without the skill ratings, you can’t really say that Quick Play is a nice escape from the competitive scene either.
But you know what is? Lucioball.
In a Rocket League-style game mode, Lucioball is the first Overwatch brawl that truly feels ‘fun’ and sufficiently different enough from all of the other weekly brawls that mostly just involve you picking certain heroes and playing the same modes over again. Lucioball feels more like a sports game mode that you can play to unwind from hours’ worth of intense competitive play, and it sure would be nice if Blizzard considered making it a permanent game mode.
