Earlier today, Max Parker from Psyonix revealed some new information about the update coming to the PS5 version of Rocket League tomorrow. If you have all of the compatible hardware you need, then you’ll be able to play Rocket League at 120 FPS for the first time ever on a PlayStation console.
Starting tomorrow (Aug. 18), an update will let players try out two brand-new video quality modes on the PS5 version of the game. The first is Quality mode which is displays a 4K checkerboard resolution running at 60 FPS with HDR. If you don’t have a 4K TV or monitor, then the game will display at 1080p supersampled down from 4K.
The PS4 Pro could do 60 FPS and 4K, but Performance mode is where you’ll get a never-before-seen feature in Rocket League on a PlayStation console. In Performance mode, the game will run at 120 FPS with HDR and a resolution that’s about 70% of 4K (2688×1512). Again, supersampling will be used on 1080p displays.
Just remember that in order to run the game at 120 FPS, you’ll need a compatible monitor or TV as well as proper cables. If your display doesn’t have an HDMI 2.1 port and doesn’t have a 120hz refresh rate, then you’re out of luck. But if your screen has all of that, then you should be set since the HDMI cable packed in with the PS5 is able to carry the signal.
On top of that, a special Ratchet & Clank bundle featuring new toppers, boosts, and decals will be available to PS4 and PS5 Rocket League players. More specifically, PlayStation owners will receive the Ratchet & Clank Punk Decal for Octane, Negatron Collider Boost, Clank Balloon Topper, and the Ratchet Balloon Topper as a free gift when logging in starting Aug. 18.
