NieR: Automata – Apologetic Machines

Recommended Videos

The Apologetic Machines are probably the biggest mystery in NieR: Automata at the moment. You can find these strange, kowtowing machines in the Flooded City, the Forest Zone, and the Desert Zone. In all these areas, they’re seen kneeling in front of a locked door. If you talk to them, they’ll apologize and say that you weren’t supposed to find this area. To make up for your wasted time, they’ll then self-destruct so that you can get some money and resources for your trouble.

Even after self-destructing, the locked doors behind them will remain closed. At the time of writing, it doesn’t look like it’s possible to open these doors, even with the hacking ability that 9S offers. The machines and the locked doors don’t seem to be tied to any of the game’s side missions either. With that in mind, it seems highly likely that these doors could lead into areas that are being reserved for future content DLC that expands upon the story. In short, don’t worry about the Apologetic Machines or the doors. There’s no use for them right now.
