EA has revealed that crossplay will be coming to Need for Speed Heat on June 9, allowing PC, PS4, and Xbox One players to play together, and it is the first EA game to do so.

In a letter posted to the EA website, Matt Webster, General Manager of Criterion Games, spoke about the future of the NFS series, following the announcement in February that the Guildford based studio would be leading development of the racing series’ next instalment, and what the next few months will hold for 2019’s Heat.

Just recently, Heat and a few more Need for Speed titles came to Steam and Webster’s post revealed that it will also be coming to EA and Origin Access on June 16.

An update will be coming to Heat tomorrow, June 9, adding crossplay and fixing some minor bugs. With the update installed, you’ll be able to opt-in to crossplay before playing with friends on other systems. Speaking about crossplay, Webster wrote:

“At Criterion, we’ve always believed that games are better with friends. We don’t want your platform of choice to be a barrier for that experience. So we’re thrilled to let you all know that on June 9, Need for Speed Heat will be the first EA title to offer cross-play, meaning that players – regardless of their platform – can jump into Palm City together as one, united community.”

“You’ll know from our past history that we want to bring players together however we can. With this announcement and what we’re working on for the future, we’re focused on uniting the wider Need for Speed community – so that you can play, race and compete with all of your friends.”

With this being written by a member of the Criterion team, and not EA, nothing was mentioned about whether other games will see crossplay functionality added in the near future, but it seems like EA are opening up to adding the feature to their games.

The crossplay update will come to Need for Speed Heat on June 9.
