Set to launch next year on PS4 and PC, Tormented Souls is an upcoming survival horror game heavily inspired by beloved classics of the genre. In its debut trailer today, we’re given our first look at this modern take on the design first made popular by the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
The fixed-camera perspective, focus on resource and inventory management, and what appears to be all manner of cryptic puzzles are certainly reminiscent of Capcom’s iconic franchise. Its suitably spooky setting is even accented with an eerie piano beat that makes it feel even more like a 90s nostalgia trip.
Tormented Souls’ story is teed up by the developer/publisher team in today’s press release:
While investigating the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake – something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked in a bathtub – and hooked up to some decrepit medical equipment, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of an abandoned mansion turned hospital.
Beyond incorporating quintessential classic survival horror elements like backtracking, exploration, and combat, Tormented Souls has one or two of its own unique mechanics to add new layers to the gameplay experience. This includes mirrors, shimmering gateways, Caroline can manipulate the very fabric of reality in surprising ways – turning the situation to her advantage.
Tormented Souls follows on from titles like Daymare 1998 as another indie survival horror in the pastiche of classics like Resident Evil.
