Today AMD is hosting its Financial Analyst Day 2020, and chief executive officer Lisa Su provided an interesting estimate for shipments of PS4 and Xbox One.
According to the presentation, AMD estimates that PS4 and Xbox One have shipped over 150 million units combined.
This number spans the period between the consoles’ launch in 2013 to 2020, so it should be up to date.
[Update: the version of the presentation slides uploaded after the conference mentioned that the data was sourced from vgchartz.com. This mention was not included in the version of the presentation slides projected during the conference that we watched live.
It’s a fairly weird choice, considering that AMD should have enough data about the hardware components they shop to Sony and Microsoft to make its own estimates, so either they consider the data accurate, or they did not want to share their own data. Either way, this new detail certainly casts a shadow on the reliability of the 150+ million figure.]
This is rather relevant data considering that AMD manufactures the APU for both consoles, so they are likely to have a rather clear idea of the shipped volumes.
While Microsoft does not provide updated numbers for its shipments, Sony does, and the latest data is at 108.9 million units as of December 31, 2020.
This should give us a pretty decent idea of what shipments of the original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X combined could be like.
Of course, we don’t have a way to calculate Xbox sales precisely and this still leaves a few question marks (for instance, we don’t know how much that “+” in that “150+” million is), but it’s definitely an interesting tool to get a rough estimate of how well Microsoft’s consoles have been doing.
It’s worth mentioning that AMD is still going to be providing the hardware at the foundation of both upcoming next-generation consoles from Sony Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X.
