Get a Closer Look at the Gameplay and Story of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

CD Projekt Red has released a brand new trailer for Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, detailing the game’s card-based combat system as well as the overall story. You play as Queen Meve, ruler of Lyria and Rivia, as she struggles to fend off an invasion from the Nilfgaard Empire.

As Meve you’ll have to explore the Northern Realms and forge new alliances to fight off the Empire. Of course, since this is a game in the Witcher universe, there’s plenty of important choices to make along the way. The trailer puts an emphasis on how one bad choice could bring everything crashing to the ground, and bad choices can even affect your army’s morale. At the same time, enemy spies will infiltrate your ranks, requiring you to judge who’s actually your ally.

A War Camp acts as your central hub, letting you upgrade your troops and cards to make them stronger. Thronebreaker will require you to gather supplies and resources in order to do this, which you’ll find scattered around the world. The card-based combat of Thronebreaker looks a bit faster and flashier than your typical game of Gwent. It makes sense, as these battles are actually emulating massive conflicts.

Finally, while we get a new cast of character in Thronebreaker, the end of the trailer suggests that Geralt of Rivia will play a role in some way.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales launches on Oct. 23 for PC, and it’s exclusively available through Gog.com. The console version will be arriving later on Dec. 4 for Xbox One and PS4.
