Future Smash Bros. Games Likely to Have Fewer Characters, According to Sakurai

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the most ambitious entry in Nintendo’s mascot fighting series; with every single past fighter returning to the battlefield, the roster is huge and has over 60 playable characters to choose from. When it was fully unveiled during Nintendo’s pre-recorded E3 video presentation, the Japanese company made it clear that everyone would be coming back in Smash Ultimate, and by everyone they meant everyone.

With Smash Ultimate being such a gargantuan game for the series creator, Masahiro Sakurai, to work on, he says in an interview with Famitsu magazine (translated by Source Gaming) that for the next entry in the series “the number of fighters is likely to decrease.” Sakurai says that he and the development team might have “opened Pandora’s Box and crushed the potential of future Smash titles” by adding in so many characters to Ultimate. Sakurai isn’t necessarily thinking about the next Smash game just yet, but instead is ensuring that Ultimate leaves fans of the series satisfied.

In other Smash Bros. news, Nintendo has announced that all of the new fighters that were not playable in the Wii U/3DS versions of Smash will indeed be getting their own amiibo. That means you can look forward to having your precious Samus amiibo perched right next to your new Ridley amiibo on your special shelf.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is planned to launch for the Nintendo Switch on Dec 7, 2018.
