What Is Bella Ramsey’s Height in HBO’s The Last of Us?

For her height, Ellie sure packs a punch.

Bella Ramsey stands at 5 feet 1.5 inches tall, which is about 156 centimeters. I know that many fans were worried about this because the character of Ellie in the video games is actually a bit taller. In the first game, an in-game note found in the Boston Capitol Building confirms she is 5 feet 3 inches. By the time we get to the sequel, her character model has been scaled up to 5 feet 5 inches.

While a height difference of an inch or two might not seem like a big deal to me, it creates a massive 10 inch gap when you put Bella Ramsey next to Pedro Pascal, who stands at 5 feet 11 inches. This difference is one of the most interesting parts of how the show was filmed. I want to take you through the technical magic and the deep lore that explains why this stature actually works better for the story than a taller actress would have.

How the HBO crew managed the 10 inch gap

If you have watched the show as many times as I have, you might have noticed that Ellie and Joel often seem much closer in height during intimate scenes. The production team, led by cinematographers Eben Bolter and Ksenia Sereda, used what they called a toolbox of motivations to handle this. They did not just rely on standard camera tricks. They used specific hardware to make the world feel grounded.

  • The team used a ZeeGee rig, which is a specialized three axis head mounted to a Steadicam arm. It allows the camera operator to set the lens at any height from the actor’s ankles to above their head without the weight of the camera being a factor.
  • Most of the show was filmed in Backpack Mode. This involved stripping the ARRI ALEXA Mini camera of all its batteries and antennas to make it light enough for operators to move with the actors.
  • A strict rule was followed on set: camera operators could not move their feet unless the actors moved theirs. This kept the perspective hinged to the eye levels of Bella and Pedro, which naturally smoothed out the height difference.
  • For medium shots, the production used traditional apple boxes. This is a classic Hollywood technique where a shorter actor stands on a wooden crate so their eyeline matches their co-star perfectly.
  • The choice of Super 35 sensors over large format was also intentional. It provided a deeper depth of field, keeping the backgrounds sharp and making the characters feel properly sized within the massive, ruined environments.

The technical 3D measurements of game Ellie

When I look at the raw data from the games, the measurements are even more precise because they are hardcoded into the assets. Unlike human actors, digital models have a definitive scale. Character artists at Naughty Dog used a 1:1 centimeter scale in Maya to build these characters.

  • Ellie at age 14 is exactly 160.0 centimeters in the model files.
  • Adult Ellie in the sequel is hardcoded at 165.7 centimeters.
  • Joel Miller stands at 182.3 centimeters in the 3D environment.
  • Abby Anderson is scaled to 175.5 centimeters, which is about 5 feet 9 inches.

If you are playing The Last of Us Part 1, you might notice the environments look slightly different than the original. This is because video game environments are typically built 30 percent larger than real life. Developers do this so the third person camera does not feel cramped in small rooms. This is why doors and hallways often look strangely wide when Ellie walks through them.

Why the lore explains Ellie’s smaller stature

I have spent a lot of time digging through the medical notes in the Firefly hospital at Salt Lake City, and they provide a heartbreaking explanation for why Ellie is so small. It is not just genetics. It is a result of the FEDRA ration economy.

  • In the Boston Quarantine Zone, survivors live on a high calorie but nutritionally poor diet. FEDRA ration bars are designed for survival, not optimal growth.
  • The medical report in the game confirms Ellie is highly anemic. Her red blood cell and platelet counts are significantly below normal.
  • Her growth from 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 5 inches over five years is consistent with someone experiencing chronic nutritional stress.
  • Joel likely maintained his 200 lb build because of his work as a smuggler. He had access to forged ration cards and higher quality protein like insect meal and scavenged goods that the average civilian could never get.

If you are trying to find all the hidden collectibles and notes in the hospital, keep an eye out for these details. They show that the creators really thought about the biological impact of living in a post outbreak world, which is something the show can take from.

Stealth mechanics and spatial data

The height of the character model is not just a visual choice. It is a core part of the game’s AI detection system. In the sequel, Naughty Dog introduced a prone crawling mechanic that relies entirely on Ellie’s low profile.

  • If Ellie is lying prone in tall grass, she is effectively invisible to enemies more than 7 feet away.
  • The AI will lose her position if she drops down between 4 and 6 feet from them, though they will move to investigate her last known spot.
  • If she is within 3 feet, her physical presence is too large to be hidden by the grass and she will be spotted.

This is why I think Bella Ramsey was such a great choice for the live action version. Her agility and ability to wiggle into small crevices mirrors the best survival strategies used in the game. She does not need to be physically imposing to be dangerous. She uses her size as a tactical advantage, just like we see in the lodge kitchen battle during the winter chapter.

How the Part 1 Remake fixed the proportions

One thing that really stood out to me in the PS5 remake is how the character models were updated to look more like their real world counterparts. In the original PS3 version, characters had slightly exaggerated proportions, like larger eyes, to help convey emotion with older facial tech.

The remake uses subsurface scattering to simulate how light penetrates the skin, making the characters look less like cartoons and more like actual people. This update actually brought the game characters closer to the ages of the actors. For instance, Tess now looks like a woman in her late 40s who has survived two decades of a pandemic, which matches the performance we see on HBO.

If you want to see these details for yourself, I recommend using the model viewer in the extras menu. You can zoom in on every hair strand and clothing fiber to see just how much work went into making these characters feel real. Whether it is Bella Ramsey’s performance or the hardcoded 165.7 cm model, the goal has always been the same: to create a character who feels like they belong in a world where every inch of survival is earned.
