Surge 2: How to Parry

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Given its similarity to the Soulsborne games, it’s no surprise The Surge 2 has a parrying mechanic you’d be well-served to learn. That’s why we’re here to walk you through how to parry in The Surge 2.

How to Parry in The Surge 2

As with other Soulsborne games, The Surge 2’s parry mechanic is simple enough to use. All you have to do is wait for an enemy to launch an attack at you. Once they do, press and hold the block button to counter their blow.

You’re not done just yet, though, as you’ll need to move your mouse or right analog stick in the direction of the arrow that appears on-screen courtesy of your Directional Block Analyzer. Do this, and you’ll then successfully parry in Surge 2.

Of course, this is easier said than done. Failing to pull off the parry can leave you open to far more damage from an attack than if you blocked.

Likewise, not every enemy has the same timing tied to their attacks. This can lead to some required practice time before you try countering against them, or else you’ll end up dying far more times than needed.

It’s also worth noting that the Directional Block Analyzer must be equipped for the arrows to appear on-screen. It is still possible to parry in Surge 2 without it, but you’ll then have to figure out the direction you need to move your mouse or right analog stick in for yourself.

Getting the Directional Block Analyzer

You’ll get the Directional Block Analyzer right after you get the Exorig in the Detention Center. It’s impossible to miss, so it shouldn’t be something you struggle with tracking down. Once you’ve got it, simply equip the implant and you’re good to go.

When to Parry Enemy Attacks

With this in mind, we have a few tips for you to keep in mind when parrying:

  1. Watch for big wind-up attacks

These attacks typically have a larger window of opportunity for counters, and as such are much easier to pull off than with quicker, more subtle attacks.

  2. Avoid trying to parry larger enemies

While some of The Surge 2’s larger enemies have counter-able attacks, many have attacks that can only be dodged or blocked. More often than not, it’s better not to risk it for the sake of your survival.

  3. Don’t parry if it’s an unnecessary risk

As fun as it may be to kill an enemy with a flourish, trying to do so and failing can cost you a hard-fought victory.

Likewise, if you’re still having trouble with the mechanic, you can install the Directional Parry Analyzer implant to your character to better see when and how to counter attacks.

That should cover everything there is to know about how to parry in The Surge 2. For more on the game, check out its gory, sci-fi filled launch trailer.
