Returnal Deceased Scouts

Returnal Scavenge or Avenge Deceased Scouts: What They Do & Which You Should Choose

Returnal may feature plenty of tried and true elements from the roguelike genre, but it tends to put an interesting spin on all of them. For instance: You can track down the bodies from Selene’s past attempts, and decide what you should do once you discover them. You may be unsure of which decision yields the best rewards though, which is why you’ve been trying to find out whether you should scavenge or avenge Deceased Scouts in Returnal.

Well, worry not. We have all the answers you’re looking for laid out in this guide. Read on to discover what your choices are for dealing with deceased scouts, what each choice results in, and more.

What You Should Do With Deceased Scouts in Returnal

Before going any further, it’s worth noting that Deceased Scouts will only appear while you’re playing Returnal in online mode. This is because the Deceased Scouts represent other players who have died.

When you discover an unfortunate player’s remains, you’ll then have two potential options for dealing with them depending on how much Ether you currently have.

One is to scavenge their corpse. This will require three Ether and will allow you to gain a decent amount of resources to be used as you see fit. However, this option will only be available to you if you have the necessary Ether. If you don’t, it will be locked off to you.

The other option is to try and avenge the death of the fallen scout. This doesn’t cost anything to do and will task you with taking down the enemy that killed them.

This can be a little difficult, but if you succeed, then you’ll be rewarded with Ether, which can be used to purify Malignant objects. It will also carry over into any future run you attempt unless you spend it, making it one of the more valuable materials in the game.

Neither option is really better than the other, as each comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. As such, we recommend playing it by ear and choosing the option that seems best based on your run.

For example: If you have a lot of Ether and are short on resources, choose to scavenge. If you’re low on Ether but decked out enough to kill almost any enemy, then try avenging any Deceased Scouts you find.

That’s all there is to know about whether you should scavenge or avenge Deceased Scouts in Returnal. For more on the game, check out our guide wiki. It has plenty of other guides that’ll help you better understand this promising sci-fi roguelike.
