How to Get Zombies Off You in Resident Evil 2

The zombies in Resident Evil 2 remake are much more intimidating than in the original game; they’re tougher, harder to hit, and they can gang up on you to inflict more damage. Here’s how to get zombies off you in Resident Evil 2 if you keep getting nibbled.

As you’re no doubt aware, Resident Evil 2’s survival horror gameplay loop is all about conserving ammunition. You won’t ever have the firepower to consistently blow zombies away before they get close. You have to pick and choose your moments to engage; sometimes running is the best option.

Occasionally, though, you’re either taken by surprise, misjudge your ability to evade, or you’re just totally overwhelmed by zombies.

In Resident Evil 2, zombies latch onto you and attempt to bite you in three different ways:

  • If you’re lucky, you brush them off for no damage, which typically only happens when you’re trying to run past them.
  • They either latch onto you or push you to the ground and take a bite. This normally reduces your health by one level.
  • Two zombies simultaneously grab you, push you to the floor and bite you. This sometimes results in your health dropping by two levels.

There is a way to avoid taking any damage from a zombie if it has got you in either the first or second attack mentioned above, but you’ll need a specific weapon(s).

Equipping either the knife, flash grenade, or hand grenade will automatically produce an L1 (or left bumper) quick-time event when a zombie bites you. If you’re successful in hitting it quickly enough, Leon/Claire will fend off the zombie by either stabbing it or shoving a grenade in its mouth.

This also applies to defending attacks from dogs, lickers, or those awful poisonous monstrosities in the sewer area.

You’ll be given a three second or so window to leave the area before the flash/hand grenade detonates.

That’s all the information you should need about how to get zombies off you in Resident Evil 2. For more useful tips and guides on the game, be sure to check out our Resident Evil 2 wiki page.
