When it comes to bullet hell games like Realm of the Mad God, there’s no game that really cuts quite as close Enter the Gungeon. Don’t be fooled by its charming 2D pixels – this game is extremely punishing with the constantbarrage of bullets coming at you from every direction. Here, you play as one of four characters and weave your way through intricately laced levels jam-packed with all sorts of bullet-themed enemies. These big baddies are relentless as they are sporadic, and it’s up to you to learn their patterns as you roll your way past their attacks.

Luckily, you have your own set of firepower to fight back, from pistols to shock rifles. There’s definitely no shortage of guns in the game, and you’ll be blazing through each mission with the craziest weapons ever conceived. If you do find yourself at death’s door, however, you’ll find yourself back at the very first floor and have to start climbing up yet again and see what the next randomly generated stage has in store. While Enter the Gungeon isn’t an MMO like Realm of the Mad God, you can play the game with a friend thanks to the local co-op mode.

Runescape

Ah, Runescape, talk about a blast from the past. Chances are, you’ve probably already played this game back in 2004 when it was one of the hottest MMOs back in the day. While not exactly bullet hell, this fantasy role-playing game places you in a large fantasy realm divided by many regions, kingdoms, towns, and cities. Unlike most MMOs nowadays, Runescape doesn’t have a linear storyline but, rather, players follow their own goals and objectives throughout their adventure.

Character customization was one of the game’s biggest selling points, and you also had your own set of skills and abilities in the game. There were many monsters and creatures to fight, and god forbid you enter the Wilderness to kill other players. Just like in Realm of the Mad God, death in Runescape meant losing most of your items, starting you up from scratch once again. If you’re looking for another solid MMO to play, Runescape is definitely on par with what Realm of the Mad God has to offer. Oh, and it’s coming to mobile devices very soon as well.

Steambirds Alliance

Steambirds Alliance is another MMO that delves deep into bullet hell. Instead of walking around, however, you’ll be soaring around in your own personal ship that’s decked out with crazy lasers and bullets. There are different planes to unlock and choose from along with a variety of missions to try out. Just like with Realm of the Mad God, Steambirds Alliance places heavy emphasis on multiplayer, so you’ll be taking on plenty of enemies with your friends. Take note that the game does feature permadeath and you will lose your vehicle whenever you die. If these reasons aren’t enough to sway you over, Steambirds Alliance was developed by Spry Fox, the same developers who also co-developed Realm of the Mad God back in 2010.

Survived By

Another free-to-play MMO game, Survived By places a lot of focus on permadeath. Here, you play as your own character who must explore the disease-stricken land and face tons of powerful foes with your friends. Naturally, as a bullet hell game, you’ll be swerving past different projects, laser beams, blasts, bullets, and all sorts of deadly attacks coming your way. Don’t be too disappointed if you die, however, as a new person will carry on your legacy as the brave hero. Your dead character will leave behind Ancestral Legacies which are essentially power-ups that transfer over to your new hero. With that said, death is only the beginning in Survived By, with the new hero growing stronger than his predecessor.

Darza’s Dominion

Those without consoles or a PC can still enjoy Realm of the Mad God on the go with this mobile take of the game. Players can choose from seven classes and push through different and dangerous areas filled with foes. Each class, from Apothecary to Wyrm Ryder, each has their own weapons, armor, and abilities to choose from, making it all the more interesting when you play with friends.

Darza’s Dominion is also a bullet hell game, so be prepared to dance around bullets and whatnot as you try and avoid getting fried up. While there are a few notable downgrades compared to what Realm of the Gods has to offer, Darza’s Dominion is the perfect bullet hell game to take with you on the go if you’re looking for something really close to the MMO.

Nuclear Throne

While Nuclear Throne might not be an MMO, it does contain plenty of non-stop top-down action that’s definitely worth looking into if you’re a fan of Realm of the Mad God. This game thrives on tight action, with characters trudging along tight hallways and narrow maps as they avoid incoming attacks and retaliate with their own arsenal of guns.

In line with this, Nuclear Throne does have a wide array of weapons and abilities called Mutations to choose from. You can rely on your reflexes for the most part, but you will have some pretty epic abilities to avoid incoming fire or destroy waves of enemies. Similarly, each playable character has their own set of special traits that each give them their own specific edge in combat.
