Is There Co-Op Multiplayer in Octopath Traveler?
Octopath Traveler is the upcoming JRPG for Nintendo Switch from the masters themselves at Square Enix. Returning to their roots with turn-based combat and stunning sprite-based graphics on a 3D plain, it has the makings of the ideal love letter to the classics.
Because of the game’s unique structure and multiple character routes, it may give the appearance that it has co-op multiplayer functionality. This is not the case however, as the game is intended to be enjoyed as a solo experience. With its turn-based battle mechanics, the gameplay does not lend itself well to multiple people playing at the one time, and there are no additional modes that offer a co-op multiplayer alternative.
This isn’t going to change anywhere down the track, as producer Masashi Takashi has already confirmed that there will not be any DLC added later on. His official statement is that “the retail version is a complete game”, a fairly hardline stance that his team would be unlikely to stray from.
It seems that the only way you can play Octopath Traveler cooperatively with your friends is the same way you would do so for any turn-based RPG: pass the controller between one another as each character takes their turn. It’s archaic, but it’s the only gig in town, so you’ll have to just settle for it.
Octopath Traveler comes out on July 13, exclusively for Nintendo Switch. For more tips, tricks and strategies, you’ll definitely want to feast your eyes on our wiki.
