Brawlout

Brawlout is about as close as you can get to a Smash Bros game on a PS4.

It’s a 2.5D fighting game in which the goal is to damage your opponents and send them flying off of the stage. Each character has a bunch of different standard moves and special moves.

If you’ve played any iteration of Smash Bros, you’ll feel right at home with Brawlout.

Brawlout is even somewhat of a crossover title, featuring several guest characters from different indie studios: The Drifter from Hyper Light Drifter, Juan from Guacamelee, and Yooka-Laylee.

Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla, Blue Mammoth Games, Ubisoft

Just like Brawlout, Brawhalla isn’t too dissimilar to Super Smash Bros, especially in terms of its core gameplay.

Opponents must be knocked off of the stage to be defeated, just like Smash, but fighters lack a damage percentage. Instead, damage is indicated by a colored bar. The closer the bar is to red, the further fighters will be sent when hit.

The major difference with Brawlhalla is that it is free-to-play and can be picked up right now on the PlayStation Store.

Brawhalla has a rotation of 8 free characters every week. Characters can also be bought outright with in-game currency or with hard-earned cash.

And for those miffed that Rayman’s not in Smash Bros yet, he is playable in Brawlhalla.

Nidhogg 2

Smash Bros is a pretty fast-paced game, but it pales in comparison to the ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ speed of Nidhogg 2.

Nidhogg 2 can be described as a 1-on-1 fighting game, but it’s much more of a party game and is especially fun in local multiplayer.

The goal is simple: run past your opponent to the left or right side of the screen in order to escape. However, players constantly respawn after death, and everyone dies in one hit.

This makes it a really easy game to pick up and play. No matter how much you’re losing, a comeback is only seconds away.

Nidhogg 2 features a handy tournament mode for if you are playing in a party setting with more than two people.

Gang Beasts

Gang Beasts

One of the best things about Super Smash Bros is that its tight controls work in tandem with its precise and well-executed physics. However, Gang Beasts is fun because of its janky controls and physics.

Gang Beasts is like Smash Bros in that the aim is to throw opponents off the stage, but doing that is no easy task.

The game uses ragdoll physics, and they’re super wonky. That’s what makes the game fun, though. You have to grab your opponents and attempt to push, pull, or throw them off of the stage or hold on for dear life as someone tries to do it to you.

It’s a game that is fun no matter if you’re winning or losing and is sure to evoke more than a few laughs from you and your friends.

Towerfall Ascension

playstation 4, platinum trophies, platinum, trophy, difficult, hard, towerfall ascension

Just like Smash Bros, Towerfall Ascension is a blast to bang out at parties.

The rules aren’t quite the same as Super Smash Bros; K.O.s aren’t achieved by flinging your opponents off of the stage. Instead, you simply have to catch your opponent off guard and stick them with an arrow.

Jumping around the small 2D stages, avoiding arrows, while also trying to finish off your foes with your own arrows can get pretty chaotic.

Despite this, it’s not as frenzied as you may think. There’s method to the madness. Arrows don’t just grow on trees, so you have to be patient and think about your shots as to not empty your quiver.
