Odyssey is the most recent major battle content to be added in Final Fantasy XI. In Odyssey, you’ll be returning to new areas of Walk of Echoes to farm segments, lustreless items, Sheol Gaol items, and RP. At its core, it’s a simple event, but there are a lot of moving parts. With that, we hope this guide on FFXI’s Odyssey event can be of some service.
We’ll explain the three different Sheols (A, B, & C), how they all work, and what the general farming loop should be for both inexperienced and experienced players.
Before starting: This guide is meant to give you a primer for what the event is, the basics on how it works, and some direction on what the point of it is, as FFXI doesn’t do a great job of explaining all this in-game. This guide is not meant to be an in-depth breakdown of everything that exists in Odyssey.
We recommend visiting the BG Wiki page for Odyssey for a more in-depth breakdown of everything there is to know about Odyssey. There’s a lot going on and it may be helpful to get a quick idea from reading this guide, trying it out for yourself, and then visiting the BG Wiki page to start picking up the finer details.
FFXI Odyssey Guide: The Basics
Odyssey is an event that can be accessed via a ??? near a Vertical Conflux found in the town of Rabao. After speaking to the Pilgrim Moogle a bit, you’ll eventually have the ability to get a Moglophone.
Moglophones allow you to enter Sheol A, the first area of Odyssey, and eventually Sheol B and C as well. You can get a new Moglophone every 20 hours.
The maximum amount of Moglophones you can hold in reserve is two. The Pilgrim Moogle will only carry one for you. However, if you receive one from it, in 20 hours it will build up another charge that can be picked up from the Pilgrim Moogle at the ??? once you’ve burned the one in your possession.
You can bring up to six players with you into Sheol A, B, and C, but if you’re playing with less than that, you can summon trusts in to fill out the rest of your party.
FFXI Odyssey Guide: Sheol A, B, & C Explained
The first area you can enter is Sheol A, and you’ll have 30 minutes in total to explore it.
In Sheol A, and all the lettered Sheols for that matter, you will be in an unmapped area of Walk of Echoes, and will encounter packs of enemies.
There are two types: Nostos and Agon. Nostos can be just about any non-Beastmen enemy, and Agon are Beastmen. Nearly all of the enemy packs will be just Nostos enemies.
However, one pack will be a mix of Nostos and Agon. You can see Agon enemies and they will attack you (via True Sight and True Sound), but they are translucent and cannot be attacked by you at first.
The only way you can defeat these Agon is by destroying an Agon Halo near where the enemies roam. Once the Agon Halo is destroyed, you are free to clear the Agon Beastmen enemies if you wish.
You can also entirely avoid Agon enemies and any Nostos packs by carefully walking around them.
Currencies: Moogle Segments and Izzat
Defeating enemies while in the lettered Sheols will drop Moogle Segments and Izzat.
Segments can be used to purchase lustreless items (not recommended as the number of segments needed per item is terrible) or be used to spawn Sheol Gaol NMs later on (recommended). Segments accumulated by killing enemies in any lettered Sheol zone do not expire.
Izzats are used to spawn NMs from an Ethereal Junction that will appear at the location of the Agon Beastmen and the Halo once the Halo and all of the Beastmen are defeated. More on these NMs in a moment. Izzats are counted on the top left of the screen and in your log, and do expire at the end of each run.
UNM Ethereal Junctions
In addition to the Ethereal Junctions that spawn after killing the Agon enemies on each floor, there are other Ethereal Junctions that appear throughout each floor that you can spawn NMs with using UNM equipment. You can kill these NMs for additional rewards at the end if you wish.
Check out the BG Wiki guide on Odyssey for more details on which UNM NMs you can pop on each floor.
Reaching the End & How to Unlock All Sheol Zones in FFXI
Each Sheol in FFXI has a number of different floors. They’re accessed by finding the Vertical Conflux in each floor to go up to the next floor. On the last floor, the final conflux will give you a Gil reward based on the number of enemies you defeated prior to touching it. It will also give you a box of lustreless items.
You don’t need to leave the area once you touch that Conflux. You can continue to farm if you want, but the Gil and box rewards from killing the Izzat NM(s) from the Agon Halo/Beastmen are locked in for that run the moment you touch it.
You only need to reach the final Conflux at least one time in order to unlock each Sheol area. If you need help reaching the end of each Sheol to unlock all four areas, here are some helpful video guides from FFXI YouTubers cloudchief arcade and NextGames: Sheol A, Sheol B, Sheol C.
For example, reaching the final Conflux on the last floor of A will unlock Sheol B when you go and speak to the Pilgrim Moogle next. Finishing B will unlock C, and reaching the end of C will grant access to Sheol Gaol. Make sure to activate the Records of Eminence objective within the Content>Odyssey section for each Sheol for a one-time reward.
You don’t have to hit the end to get benefits out of Odyssey, and some strategies for farming it do not advise it. But if you want the Gil and box rewards, you’ll need to reach the end and hit that last Conflux.
FFXI Odyssey Guide: Sheol A, B, & C – How to Farm
There’s no right way to tackle Odyssey in FFXI. The most efficient method of getting something out of it is going to depend on your group size, goals, and gear.
Farming Lustreless Items for Gil
If you’re flying solo, new, or have lower-end gear, you can still get something out of Odyssey. The most simple thing to do is to enter Sheol A (the easiest one), summon a group of trusts, and just kill Nostos enemies, avoiding all of the Agon.
You’ll get lustreless item drops that can stack to up to 99, and generally sell somewhere around one million Gil.
In this way, Odyssey can be a decent way to farm up some Gil. Preferably play as Thief, or at least sub Thief, with some Treasure Hunter gear equipped to give yourself the best chance at drops. Or at the very least, swap in some Treasure Hunter gear if you’re not able to play as or sub Thief.
If you’re a bit more advanced with your gear or have a few friends to help out, you can attempt to kill the Agon Halo and enemies along with a few Nostos and pop NMs. Then, get to the end before the time runs out (feel free to skip past groups of enemies) for additional Gil rewards and lustreless item boxes.
A larger, stronger, and more experienced group can handle Sheol B and even Sheol C for more Segments and better rewards at the end.
This helpful video guide from NextGames provides you with a few different strategies for maximizing your farming runs of Odyssey, and we definitely recommend checking it out before giving it a try.
Trading Lustreless Items for UNM Augments
Instead of selling the Lustreless items, you can actually use them to augment any UNM gear that you have. Different UNM augments require different lustreless items. Sheol A drops Scales, Sheol B drops Hides, and Sheol C drops Wings.
To start the augment process, trade a +1 version of the item you want to augment, and 1 of the corresponding lustreless item used to increase its RP to a Unity NPC in either of the three starter cities. You’ll need to pay 30,000 Unity Accolades for the augment process to begin. You’ll need 1,190 Lustreless items to max out the augment.
Check out this helpful guide from BG Wiki about all the different items that can be augmented and what they require.
Farming Segments for Sheol Gaol Runs
Finally, the other major reason to run Sheol A, B, and/or C is to farm Moogle Segments that you can use to buy Moglophone IIs to pop enemies in Sheol Gaol.
Sheol Gaol is an entirely different beast that we will tackle in a separate guide. However, know for now that to prepare for this, simply farm as many Moogle Segments as you can. They don’t expire, and the most efficient way to get them is to tackle the most challenging enemies you can.
Each floor of each Sheol increases in difficulty and rewards more segments. And, in addition, each individual Sheol is harder than the last.
Ideally, if you’re in a powerful group of six players, you are going to Sheol C and killing as many enemies as you can on the hardest floors you can handle before the time runs out.
We’ll talk more about Sheol Gaol and farming Moogle Segments in a future FFXI Odyssey guide, but for now, check out this helpful video guide from NextGames featuring another FFXI YouTuber Ruamoko for some tips to get you going.
That’s all for now for our FFXI Odyssey Guide for Sheol A, B, and C. As you can see, there’s a lot going on, but hopefully this guide gave you a basic idea of what to expect. Best of luck in there!
