How to Solve the Pumpkin Puzzle in Borderlands 3

After opening up the portal to Heck in Borderlands 3, you’ll be transported to a new area called The Heck Hole. This is where all of the content related to the game’s Bloody Harvest event can be found, including the Pumpkin Puzzle.

To find it though, you’ll need to advance to the temple located halfway through the area, shown on the map below. It’ll be guarded by a shielded heavy enemy and some smaller basic enemies.

Take out the enemies, and then advance into the temple. Once inside, you should see four Jack-o-lanterns on pedestals at the top of some stairs, lit up with different colors. Past the Jack-o-lanterns are four skulls you can interact with, each lit up with a color corresponding to a Jack-o-lantern.

This is Borderlands 3’s Pumpkin Puzzle, and as you might have guessed, you need to interact with the skulls in a certain order dictated by the Jack-o-lanterns.

To solve the puzzle, head back down to the bottom of the stairs leading up to the Jack-o-lanterns. Then, check to see what the color of the Jack-o-lantern on the far-left side of the room is.

Interact with the corresponding colored skull in the back of the room. You should hear a click to verify you activated the correct skull.

Repeat the process with the next three Jack-o-lanterns, moving from the far-left side of the room to the far-right. Also, be sure to go back out and check the color of the Jack-o-lanterns each time you interact with a skull, as their color changes each time you interact with them.

Once you’ve interacted with the skulls successfully four times in a row, the puzzle will be solved, opening up a secret area directly across from the skulls.

Time needed: 10 minutes

So, to recap how to solve the Pumpkin Puzzle in Borderlands 3:

  1. Go to the temple found halfway through the Heck Hole area

The Pumpkin Puzzle is located inside the temple.

  2. Check what the color of the Jack-o-lantern on the far-left side of the room is from the bottom of the stairs

This is the first color in a sequence of four you’ll need to activate.

  3. Interact with the corresponding skull at the top of the stairs

You’ll know you activated the correct one when you hear a click.

  4. Repeat the process with the next three Jack-o-Lanterns

Move from the far-left side of the room to the far-right. Come back out to check the color of each subsequent Jack-o-Lantern, as their color changes each time you correctly interact with the skulls.
