All Silent Hill monsters ranked

All Silent Hill Monsters, Ranked by Fear Factor

They said it couldn't be done!

Konami’s beloved foggy lakeside town boasts some of the most terrifying monstrosities in the entirety of gaming. Not only are they hideous to look at, but they also symbolically represent fear, unconscious guilt, or deep-rooted anxiety within a specific character. In other words, Silent Hill is essentially a mirror, while the monsters are, in essence, a manifestation of the feelings of a specific individual. But what are the scariest monsters that reside in the titular locale? We’ve done the math, so you don’t have to, so let’s dive in, shall we?

Editor’s Note: Thanks to the sheer volume of monstrosities that roam the fog-ridden streets of Silent Hill, we’ve listed some of the enemies in the middle of this guide, and will update the remaining entries with an image and more information in the future.

75.) The Void

The Void in Silent Hill: Downpour

Game: Silent Hill: Downpour

If a nondescript twinkle of red light chasing you down corridors sounds like nightmare fuel, you should probably just hand in your horror fan credentials right now. Seriously, Downpour’s enemy variety was largely panned by the community, and this thing is easily the worst offender.

74.) Swarm

Swarm from Silent Hill: Homecoming

Games: Silent Hill: Homecoming, Silent Hill: Book of Memories

Pretty much a big ol’ cockroach on steroids, this is far from Silent Hill’s most scary creatures, though if you have a fear of bugs, this could give you some mild heebie-jeebies.

73.) Bloodsucker

Bloodsucker from Silent Hill

Game: Silent Hill

Yes, leaches are horrid little things, but when it comes to their scare factor in a series as terrifying as Silent Hill? Nah. Instead, they’re largely routine nuisances that don’t really get our backs up. Next!

72.) Weeping Bat

Weeping Bat from Silent Hill Downpour

Game: Silent Hill: Downpour

At first blush, the Weeping Bat looks pretty foreboding, but on closer inspection, it’s really just a tall albino figure with a weird maw in its face. Unpleasant? Sure. Really, really scary? Not really, no.

71.) Feral

Game: Silent Hill: Homecoming

This one’s a wee doggo, but with one minor addition: it’s had its skin flayed off. Sure, I wouldn’t wanna meet it in a dark alley, but it’s still far from Silent Hill’s most bloodcurdling offerings.

70.) Bogeyman

Bogeyman from Downpour

Game: Silent Hill: Downpour

It’s a guy with a gas mask on his face. Jeez, Vatra was really, really struggling with the monster designs in Downpour, right?

69.) Air Screamer

Air Screamer from Silent Hill

Games: Silent Hill, Silent Hill: Book of Memories

Honestly, I always found these critters to be more of an inconvenience than anything truly spooky, though the way they screech while they swoop down and attack you can be a wee bit unnerving.

68.) Puppet Doctor

Puppet Doctor

Game: Silent Hill

Starting to get into slightly eerier territory now, this twisted doc is infected with a weird parasite that protrudes from his back, making him look a little bit like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, well, um… Silent Hill, I guess.

67.) Carrion/ Caliban

Carrion

Game: Silent Hill: Origins

Cows are kind of adorable, and the Carrion (and its larger Caliban counterpart) is basically a cow the size of a car who has a lot of love to give. In fact, this creature has so much love to give, it keeps jumping on top of Travis to give him a nice, warm bear hug. D’aww!

66.) Needler

Needler from Silent Hill: Homecoming

Games: Silent Hill: Homecoming, Silent Hill: Book of Memories

These monstrosities are equally tough to beat in a scrap as they are disturbing to behold. Thing is, these guys can actually block bullets with their limbs, which makes them particularly troublesome to bring down.

65.) Night Flutter

Night Flutter

Game: Silent Hill

An otherworldly version of the aforementioned Air Screamer, this winged beast is bigger, faster and nastier than its regular world counterpart.

64.) Mumbler

Mumbler from Silent Hill

Game: Silent Hill

These guys actually replaced the Grey Children in the EU version of the game as European censors found that killing child-like figures to be a wee bit problematic. As a result, these critters were born, which are more mole-like in their design, and a lot less scary than their child-like counterparts.

63.) Screamer

Screamer from Silent Hill Downpour

Game: Silent Hill: Downpour

Face it, you’ve seen worse on a Saturday night out! Indeed, these ladies of the night may have razor-sharp claws and scream like a banshee, but they’re far from bone-chilling if we’re being honest.

62.) Bottom

Bottom

Game: Silent Hill 4: The Room

Yes, they look like a bum on legs, hence the name, but their similarities to another way creepier monster from the fourth installment is clear. Indeed, the Bottom looks a lot like the Twin Victim (more on that monster later).

61.) Glutton

Glutton from Silent Hill 3

Game: Silent Hill 3

It may look rather terrifying with its two mouths that jerk and shudder about, but the fact that it’s largely harmless nullifies its scary potential.

60.) Smog

Smog from Silent Hill Homecoming

Game: Silent Hill: Homecoming

While it almost resembles a Lying Figure from Silent Hill 2, the Smog has the added potential of spewing clouds of corrosive gas at the player. Still, the Smog loses a few points for being slightly unoriginal when compared to its preceding counterpart.

59.) Gum Head

Gum Head

Game: Silent Hill 4: The Room

An undead humanoid with leathery skin, Gum Heads are particularly nasty as they often show up in groups. Design-wise, though, they’re not super scary, but definitely have the ability to unnerve you.

58.) Mannequin

Mannequin

Game: Silent Hill 2

Even though this is one of the more iconic monsters in the Silent Hill bestiary, it’s not too intimidating thanks to its lack of meaningful weaponry. Nevertheless, they still have the potential to give us a few shivers, though.

57.) Sad Daddy

Sad Daddy

Game: Silent Hill: Origins

The first boss to make the list, the Sad Daddy is an immobile monstrosity that is fused into the wall. A symbolic representation of Travis Grady’s inner guilt for his father’s death.

56.) Lying Figure/ Straightjacket

Lying Figure

Games: Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill: Book of Memories

One of the more iconic monsters to roam the streets of Konami’s eponymous haunted town, the Lying Figure (or Straightjacket in Origins) is a contorted humanoid creature trapped in what appears to be a straightjacket made of flesh.

55.) Double Head

Double Head
Image Source: Konami via Silent Hill wiki

Game: Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill: Book of Memories

Another doggo-like enemy, the Double Head’s name comes from the fact that this beast can split its head vertically down the middle, much like the dog monster in John Carpenter’s The Thing. Oh, and it has really long red tongue. Yikes!

54.) Prisoner Juggernaut/ Prisoner Minion

Prisoners

Game: Silent Hill: Downpour

Honestly, these guys’ bark is largely worse than their bite, as they aren’t too difficult to overcome. That said, the bigger Prisoner Juggernaut types can be a little bit more of a handful than their smaller and lesser peers.

53.) Pendulum

Pendulum, Silent Hill 3

Games: Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill: Book of Memories

A creature that can either walk on its blades like feet or floats in the air, the Pendulum looks like it’s been ripped straight out of a Clive Barker nightmare. *shivers*

  • 13.) Flesh Lip
  • 12.) The One Truth
  • 11.) Siam

10.) Sepulcher

Sepulcher from Silent Hill: Homecoming

Game: Silent Hill: Homecoming

Homecoming had a fair few niggly things wrong with it, but one thing’s for sure: it wasn’t the monster designs. Yes, the largely derided PS3/Xbox 360 title had some of the best designed creatures in the entire franchise and the Sepulcher boss is one of them. No small feat!

9.) Abstract Daddy

Abstract Daddy

Game: Silent Hill 2

Though Angela has done some pretty awful things in her life (she stabbed her father in the neck and murdered her brother), as you get to know what happened, it’s fair to say that you start to empathise with her plight. In short, Angela’s a victim of sexual abuse, which is manifested in the beast that is the Abstract Daddy.

8.) Missionary

Missionary from Silent Hill 3

Game: Silent Hill 3

While the Missionary monster makes an appearance in M. J. Bassett’s lacklustre film sequel Silent Hill: Revelation, its true memory lives on in Silent Hill 3. And oh, what a creepy memory it is!

7.) Mary

Mary

Game: Silent Hill 2

The final boss of Silent Hill 2, Mary is trapped in a sort of metallic prism, which reflects her bed-ridden state in hospital. Not only does she whip players with nasty tentacles, but she also unleashes swarms of moths that can seriously rain on your parade.

6.) Asphyxia

Asphyxia

Game: Silent Hill: Homecoming

A symbolic manifestation of Margaret Holloway’s daughter who was sacrificed by suffocation to appease the Order’s God, Asphyxia is a terrifying centipede-like creature that stands tall as one of Silent Hill’s most unsettling monstrosities.

5.) The God

Silent Hill 3, The God

Game: Silent Hill 3

Silent Hill 3 is a real trip; not only does your father Harry get murdered (the protagonist from the first game), but your playable character also goes on to become the “mother” of an evil deity. Thankfully, Heather realises what’s happening and tries to put a stop to all the craziness before things truly get out of hand (basically, the end of the world.) But yeesh, the evil God creature sure looks abhorrent.

4.) Schism

Schism
Image Source: Konami via Silent Hill wiki

Game: Silent Hill: Homecoming

Another highlight from Double Helix Games’ oft-berated sequel, the Schism’s blood-curdling design comprises of a regular humanoid with a head twisted into the shape of a guillotine. Along its elongated maw are a row of razor-sharp teeth that snap at you like a rabid shark.

3.) Valtiel

Valtiel

Game: Silent Hill 3

Some call it an “angel” of Silent Hill, and others simply call it a regular ol’ demon, but whatever the case may be: Valtiel is one spine-chilling monster, and easily one of the creepiest within Konami’s much revered horror series.

2.) Twin Victim

Twin Victim

Game: Silent Hill 4

Easily one of the most spooky critters in the entire Silent Hill universe is the Twin Victim from Team Silent’s final numbered installment. Not only does it look bloodcurdlingly terrifying, but it’s also traumatic just trying to get past one of these things. You see, the Twin Victim just stands there – completely stationary – just pointing at you, until you get close enough and… BAM! It starts to make a beeline straight for you in true horror fashion. Seriously, my nightmares still have nightmares about these things…

1.) Pyramid Head

Pyramid Head

Games: Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill: Homecoming, Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill: Downpour

And here he is: Silent Hill’s most emblematic judge, jury, and executioner. Terrifying, hellishly otherworldly, and possibly one of the most iconic video game monsters ever created, Pyramid Head reigns supreme thanks to his nightmarish design (it feels painful just looking at him dragging that massive sword around) and his symbolic representation of James Sunderland’s painful inner guilt. A true masterpiece in monster design. Kudos, Team Silent! *standing ovation*
