7 Games That Just Scream ‘Merica

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

In celebration of independence day, it is time to take a look at some of the most patriotic video games ever made. Whether they take place during small instances of the game or are laced throughout the on-going themes, we’ve made a list of seven games that just scream ‘Merica.

Wolfenstein II

Wolfenstein II, 'Merica

There are few things more patriotic than killing Nazis; something that BJ Blackowitz and company do very well. In this second installment in the rebooted Wolfenstein series, the goal is to take back the land of the free from Hitler himself.

While seeing the United States in such disarray – with New York being a hazardous wasteland and the rest overrun by villainous Nazis – is a bit unnerving, it is extremely satisfying to be able to take it back, especially since you’re using a lot of firepower in Wolfenstein II to do so.

Whether its, pistols, machine guns, energy weapons, or a dual wielding variety of both, the gunplay is fast and chaotic enough to hold your attention, all without being too easy.

Broforce

In this side-scrolling run-and-gun platformer, players can take control of a handful of different commandos, each tasked with eliminating enemies and freeing prisoners to complete the level. While that may seem pretty straightforward on the surface level, it is anything but just another installment in the genre.

Alongside the catchy name, everything about Broforce is as ‘Merica as possible. Whether it is the hypermasculine character designs and names, the references, or the fact that each level ends with your character planting an American flag in the ground, there are few games that feel more American.

No doubt you’ll want to rip off your shirt and flex like the bald eagle on the cover art before all is said and done.

Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin's Creed 3, 'Merica

The Assassin’s Creed series has always had a fascinating way of interjecting its narrative into known history. Thanks to its Animus, players can explore real-life locations and meet historically famous people, all with a little fantastical twist.

Assassin’s Creed III is one of the more interesting bits of alternative history the series has provided though, as it is set in the United States for the first time, during the 18th century. Getting to explore old-time versions of New York and Boston, as well as interact with realistic renditions of Paul Revere, Ben Franklin, and even George Washington is certainly something few thought they’d be able to do in a video game.

If nothing else, simply purchase the game to witness a small dose of what life was like back during the foundation of the United States.

Freedom Fighters

In a world where the Soviet Union dropped the first Atomic Bomb, the United States is on the verge of invasion, as communist red states pop up all over the globe. When the Soviets launch a surprise attack, it is up to two plumbers, Chris and Troy Stone, to lead the resistance.

The game takes place entirely in New York, as players control Chris, who in turn can recruit people to join his cause via Charisma. This is earned by freeing prisoners, capturing bases, and destroying supplies.

In a time where creative third-person shooters were a dime a dozen, Freedom Fighters stood out thanks to these unique mechanics and its Red Dawn-like invasion storyline.

While the name and premise itself are pretty darn patriotic, I can also think of few things more ‘Merica than two blue collared brothers fighting for freedom.

Fallout 3

fallout 3

Like a lot of other titles on this list, the Fallout series revolves around an alternative American history where the United States suffers a Nuclear catastrophe. For Fallout 3, the game is set in the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., also known as the Capital Wasteland.

Like the Wolfenstein series, it can be a bit jarring to see the United States in such bad shape. Monuments like the White House, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery are all but destroyed in the game.

Yet the themes present in Fallout 3 are one of persistence in times of trouble. While not everyone you meet is pleasant and cheery, the citizens of the United States haven’t given up, adjusting to life in the Wastes, hoping to find a way to rebuild.

If nothing else, remember that the game also features a giant military robot named Liberty Prime that spouts anti-communist, pro ‘Merica slogans. “Communism is the very definition of failure!”

Red Dead Redemption

America’s fascination with the Wild West is likely to never fade, as the lawlessness of the 1900s still inspires entertainment even today. Red Dead Redemption epitomizes everything fun about the time period, putting players in the shoes of John Marston, a former gang member simply trying to provide a good life for his family.

Alongside engaging in gunfights and duels, Red Dead Redemption explores the old west in unique ways. Players can participate in mini-games (poker, five-finger filet), hunt, and even interact with characters that can only be found in that time period.

While meeting snake-oil salesmen might make players want to tie them to a train track, they’ll have to keep an eye on the honor system. Even the most lawless of times in the United States doesn’t let criminals prosper without some repercussions.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD

As you can see based on a lot of the games on this list, the United States loves to place America at the forefront of its video games, leading to a lot of exaggerated themes as a result. Despite this, no game compares to the amount of  ‘Merica that takes place in FromSoftware’s Metal Wolf Chaos XD.

That’s right, the team that made Dark Souls created a third-person suit-shooter where the vice president, Richard Hawk, leads a coup d’Ă©tat to take over the United States. The only person that can stop him President Michael Wilson, a fictional relative of Woodrow Wilson.

Wilson dons a mech suit to combat Hawk and his traitorous military, firing plenty of missiles and ‘Merica catchphrases along the way. The game is responsible for a handful of insane quotes, including “suck my missile punch.”

Ironically, the game was never released in America…that is until this year. To celebrate the most American game of all-time, a remastered version Metal Wolf Chaos XD is set to release later this year.
