Top 5 Co-Op Games at E3 2019 That We Can’t Wait to Play

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

If you’re looking for an excuse to pal around with your friends in some new video games, E3 2019 might have you covered. There were a handful of cooperative multiplayer games announced during this year’s conferences – here are some of the ones we’re looking forward to the most.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

This year’s iteration in the Animal Crossing franchise, New Horizons, will be the first on a home console since 2008’s City Folk for the Wii. It also happens to be the first in the main-line franchise to support couch co-op multiplayer.

At E3, we got to see a good chunk of gameplay from New Horizons in Nintendo’s Treehouse Livestream, including ten or so minutes of multiplayer. In the livestream, two of the developers wandered across New Horizons’ island together, chopping down trees and collecting apples.

Up to four people will be able to play on a single system, but wireless and online play will support up to eight. The charm of the Animal Crossing series is undeniable, and sharing that experience with a friend (or many) is something that we can’t wait to try.

Rainbow Six Quarantine

Rainbow Six

Rainbow Six Siege is one of the most prominent PVP shooters of this generation, but what if there was a cooperative mode? That’s exactly what Ubisoft is trying to do with Rainbow Six Quarantine.

Quarantine is a tactical PVE shooter that pits you and two other friends against the monsters of an “unknown parasite”, as lead designer Bio Jade put it in the Ubisoft E3 conference.

While the initial teaser trailer didn’t have much gameplay to offer, we trust that Ubisoft Montreal has a hold on their first-person shooters. Rainbow 6 Siege has seen a massive explosion in both sales and eSports numbers over the past few years, largely due to a constant stream of content and steady refinements. We don’t doubt that Ubisoft has the capacity to treat Quarantine the same way.

 Battletoads

Battletoads

It’s been a very, very long time since we saw an entry in the notoriously difficult Battletoads series. It was (and still is) revered as one of the most difficult games on the NES, and was all the more hectic when a second player entered the brawl.

Considering Battletoads’ notoriety, we were genuinely surprised when Microsoft announced a reboot last E3, and even more, surprised when they had the guts to show it off this year. From the looks of it, Battletoads seems to be just as off-the-wall ridiculous as it was way back on the NES.

Some people might be turned off by the cartoon art-style, but so long as the beat-em-up action is strong enough, we’re still looking forward to it. We doubt that it will be as difficult as the NES original, but perhaps that’s for the best.

Gears 5

Gears 5

Gears of War has dabbled in co-op multiplayer in the past; the 4th entry let two players battle alongside each other in the main campaign. But this time around, The Coalition has developed an entire mode exclusively for cooperative PvE.

Announced this E3 for Gears 5, the new multiplayer mode is called Escape, and pits a squad of three against a plethora of Swarm enemies as they infiltrate a hive, plant a bomb, and storm out. There will also be a creative element to Escape mode, as you’ll be able to design your own hives for other players to battle out of.

It remains to be seen whether or not this will add any significant value to Gears of War’s already strong competitive multiplayer, but we certainly hope so.

Marvel’s Avengers

E3

Leading up to this year’s Square Enix conference, there was a leak or two detailing multi-player in the upcoming Avengers game. Sure enough, the conference came, and Crystal Dynamics confirmed that there will indeed be multi-player.

Unfortunately, the brand new trailer only gave us a short glimpse of any sort of gameplay, but what we can surmise about multiplayer outside of the trailer seems promising. An E3 Coliseum description circulating a few weeks back implied that the Avengers will be customizable, implying some sort of loot or upgrade system.

Sure, there may not be much information to lean on right now, but the very concept of a cooperative Avengers game is enough to get us excited.
