How to Get the Merciful Trophy and Achievement in A Plague Tale Innocence
A Plague Tale: Innocence has several trophies that require you to think outside the box, so it wouldn’t be surprising if you’re stumped on how to get the Merciful trophy and achievement.
Described simply as a reward given to those who “Save the dying,” the trophy and doesn’t give you any indication on where it’s obtained or the specific conditions to prompt it.
This can leave you trying to trigger it during any given chapter, drawing out your play through and distracting you from some of the game’s best moments.
Fortunately, we’ve pieced together where and how to unlock the “Merciful” trophy and achievement, and have laid out the exact steps you need to take to get it below.
Where You Can Get the Merciful Trophy and Achievement
For starters, you’ll need to have reached and/or completed Chapter 12 of the game. If you haven’t reached this point in the game and would like to avoid story spoilers, stop reading now and come back once you’ve caught up.
A short ways into the chapter, Amicia and Lucas will encounter two injured guards under torches surrounded by rats outside the remains of the De Rune manor.
The rats will be swarming in front of a door you need to advance through to continue on, leaving you to find something to distract them long enough to get through.
Seeing the situation, both guards beg for mercy, but Amicia voices her continued anger at them for attacking her family.
From here, players will have two options for continuing forward: They can either use Extinguis rounds to put out the torches above the guards and draw away the rats, or take a more creative approach that leaves both guards alive.
To get the trophy, you’ll need to vie for the creative approach.
How to Advance Without Killing Either Guard
Instead of extinguishing the torches above each guard so the rats will be distracted by eating them, you can use a nearby lantern, some lit pyres and Odoris rounds to make openings in the swarm and reach the door that way.
This may be hard to do without the first upgrade to the Alchemy Containers, which extends the length of Odoris’ effects.
If you find yourself struggling, go back to Chapter 10 and try to find the necessary materials to get the upgrade, then continue through the story up to this point.
First, aim the lantern at the guard slouched on the wall to the right. Make your way to him, then exhaust his dialogue option.
Next, look to your left for a breach in the swarm caused by a lit torch on a busted cart. Use an Odoris round to draw the rats to the left behind the cart, then run to the torch’s light.
Exhaust the second guard’s dialogue, then throw an Odoris round on the ground just in front of the pyre to your left. This will draw away the rats from the door and allow you to enter.
The “Merciful” trophy and achievement should prompt shortly after.
