Nero is back for another round in Devil May Cry 5, and this time he has a different moveset filled with new moves, while also incorporating elements from DMC 4. One of those returning elements is Exceed, something unique to Nero and his Red Queen sword. Here’s how to use Exceed and what it does in Devil May Cry 5.

How to Charge Exceed

Exceed basically lets Nero rev up his sword like a motorcycle, and you’ll have access to the ability from the very start of Devil May Cry 5. To charge it, all you need to do is pull the left trigger, LT (L2), and then hold it down for a few seconds.

You’ll need to pump the trigger multiple times to charge it, but make sure you’re holding it down and not just clicking the trigger repeatedly.

As you charge Exceed, you’ll notice the little muffler icons on the top left filling up with fire. At the start of the game you’ll only have one Exceed gauge, but you can unlock the other two with red orbs by going to the Customize menu and then selecting the Exceed section for Nero.

It’s also interesting to note that your charges won’t go away. This means you can charge the gauges at the end of the battle, and they’ll stay there until your next battle, giving you a nice little headstart.

What It Does in Devil May Cry 5

Exceed, on the most basic level, increases the amount of damage your next sword attack, or three sword attacks, do. If you just use basic sword attacks, however many gauges you have filled with apply to that many strikes. However, Exceed will also change your special attacks and combos.

So Nero’s forward Y (triangle) will now become a sweeping charge that has him hitting forward then spinning around to hit backwards as well, making it hit twice instead of the usual once. Exceed will change all of Nero’s directional combos, so keep that in mind when you’re using it.

That’s everything you need to know about how to use Exceed and what it does in Devil May Cry 5. For even more tips and guides make sure to search Twinfinite, or take a look at our expansive Devil May Cry 5 wiki.
