Getting yourself a torch in Elden Ring is one of the first things you’ll want to do, as it’ll help light up caves that can contain valuable loot, or bosses that’ll reward you handsomely for beating. In this guide, we’ll be explaining how to get the torch and light up caves in Elden Ring, as well as how to get the lantern and what makes it worth the extra Runes to purchase.
Getting a Torch in Elden Ring
You can buy a torch from Kale, the merchant at the Church of Elleh, for 200 Runes. This is one of the first places you’ll visit when exiting the tutorial area.
Once you’ve bought the torch, you won’t have to buy it again. It doesn’t deplete or run out, so you can just equip it from your inventory whenever you’re exploring a dark cave or other similar areas.
Using the Torch to Light Up Caves in Elden Ring
- Open the Menu and select ‘Equipment’
This is done by pressing the ‘Options’ button on PlayStation or Menu button on Xbox, and then selecting ‘Equipment.’
- Select any of the first three slots in the top two rows in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
These are your ‘armament’ slots for both your right and left hand.
- Select the torch and press X/ A to confirm you want to equip it to them.
- Press left on the d-pad if you equipped it to one of your left armament slots to equip your torch, or right on the d-pad if you equipped it to one of your right armament slots.
Just like that, you’re all set to use your torch in Elden Ring. It’s one of the more useful items for exploring the world, but if you’re finding the need to equip it to one of your armament slots inconvenient, there’s a more expensive but superior alternative.
Getting a Lantern in Elden Ring
You can buy a lantern from the Nomadic Merchant in the Liurnia Lake Shore Site, shown on the map below.
The Lantern costs 1800 Runes and can be passively carried, meaning you’ll attach it to your waist, allowing you to keep your hands free for your shield and/ or weapons.
The Lantern can be equipped to one of the ‘Quick Item‘ slots at the bottom of your ‘Equipment’ screen, as shown below.
Then, when you want to use the lantern, simply select it with the down d-pad menu and you’re good to go.
Just like that, you’re all set to start exploring the various caves across The Lands Between with either the cheaper torch or more expensive but slightly more useful lantern in Elden Ring.
