In a post to the official Netflix Twitter account made on Apr. 12, the company revealed that the film was officially set for production and would be made via a partnership between them and Legendary Entertainment. The company also revealed that Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director behind Kong: Skull Island, had been brought on as the director for the movie.

Specifics on other aspects of the film have not been revealed at this time. These include elements like whether the film will adapt existing source material from the series, what the plot of the movie will be, and what the release window for the film is currently projected for.

The Mobile Suit Gundam movie marks the latest live-action film adaptation of an anime undertaken in recent years. Other big series like Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, and Fullmetal Alchemist have all seen attempts to make the jump from animation, with varying levels of success.

There have also been recent attempts to adapt anime franchises into live-action television shows. One of the most recent and high profile examples of this is Cowboy Bebop, which is also being produced by Netflix. It has been reported that the series has wrapped filming, though it doesn’t currently have a firm release date.
