How to Get Catkiller in FFXIV

The Catkiller is a tricky fish that you can catch in FFXIV. It’s used primarily for desynth, and is also a required item for the quest Carpe Diem. Aside from just purchasing it off the market board on your server or trading with another player, you can catch it yourself if your Fisher job is leveled up enough.

Once you hit level 55 with your Fisher, you’ll be able to start trying to catch the Catkiller. The first method is through using the Mooch action at the Eddies fishing hole at Abalathia’s Spine – Sea of Clouds.

You’ll need to catch a HQ Bullfrog fish with one of the following baits or tackles:

  • Stonefly Nymph
  • Purse Web Spider
  • Bladed Steel Jig
  • Brute Leech

Once you catch a HQ Bullfrog, you’ll then want to use the Mooch action to release it back into the water for a chance of catching a Catkiller.

Alternatively, since the Mooch method can take a while, you can also level your Fisher up to 60, where you’ll then be able to use the Brute Leech tackle for a chance to directly capture the Catkiller at the same fishing hole.

This tackle can be purchased from the scrip exchange NPC at any of the hubs, or from the Tamamizu vendor if you’ve been keeping up with your beast tribes.

To recap, here’s how to catch the Catkiller fish in FFXIV:

  1. Get your Fisher up to level 55.

  2. Catch a HQ Bullfrog at the Sea of Clouds.

  3. Use the Mooch action for a chance to catch a Catkiller.

  4. Alternatively, once you hit level 60, you can purchase the Brute Leech tackle to try to catch it directly.
