There’s extra incentive to participate and do well in this competition. The top 999 players during the event who earn the most event points will each be awarded with 999 My Nintendo Gold Points. These gold points are equivalent to $9.99 in eShop credit.

Points in the Maximus Cup will be awarded based on how well players rank in each battle, with 1st place receiving 100 points, 2nd place receiving 50 points, 3rd place receiving 30 points, 4th-10th place receiving 20 points, 11th-30th place receiving 15 points, 31st-50th place receiving 10 points, 51st-90th place receiving 5 points, and 91st-99th place receiving 1 point.

If you are not familiar with Tetris 99, it is a Nintendo Switch Online exclusive game similar to the original Tetris, but instead, you are matched against 98 other players. All 99 players compete to clear lines, eliminate opponents, and be the last one standing.

Of course, you will need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play Tetris 99 and participate in the Maximus Cup. A physical copy of the game is available for purchase which comes with all of the DLC and a 12 month online membership.

The 11th Maximus Cup celebrating the Lunar New Year will begin on Jan. 30 at 11 p.m. PT and will last until Feb. 3 at 10:59 p.m. PT.

If you think you have what it takes to score enough points to rank in the top 999 players, you can read more about how to play Tetris 99 and the Maximus Cup guidelines on Nintendo’s website.
