Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: What a Misthios is

What a Misthios is in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

With players diving head first into the world of Ubisoft‘s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, some might be a little swamped by all of the Greek lore coming their way, or namely what a Misthios is.

Set in ancient Greece, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey lets players loose in a world full gameplay options to choose from. They can leap and climb around on ancient architecture, explore the seas in search of long lost cities and do battle with armies in historic clashes. That’s to say nothing of the main story. In it, players set out on a mission for revenge against a mysterious individual who killed their entire family.

This is in addition to choosing and developing their own character. Everything from the main character’s gender to how they interact with NPCs through dialogue decided by the player.

Alongside all of this content comes a wave of lore and terms relating to  Odyssey and its world. Case in point: The player will find the game’s main character referred to as Misthios, though if you aren’t paying attention, it’s easy to have no idea what this is.

All the same, the definition is simple enough: Misthios refers to the descendant of King Leonidas of Sparta, and a legendary mercenary who fought their way across the islands of Greece. It can refer to either Kassandra or Alexios depending on who the player chooses at the beginning of the game.

As part of the Greek lexicon, a Misthios was someone for hire. Could be that they were looking for work. Could be that they had a certain set of skills. You know, where I’m getting at. They were probably an assassin for hire, considering the history of humankind. Very likely an assassin.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of what a Misthios is. Have fun immersing yourself further into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s world and lore.
