What the Kitsune Mask Means and Why it’s Important to Fortnite Season 5

Today, Epic Games revealed one of its first major teaser images for Fortnite Season 5, which just so happened to have a giant Kitsune mask in the background with a tear in time and space conveniently situated just over its left eye. If you’re wondering exactly what the heck all of this means for when you’re jumping out of the Battle Bus in Season 5 of Fortnite, fear not, we’ll run you through what you need to know.

First off, the Kitsune mask is simply a tease for the theme of Fortnite’s Season 5. The rocket launch event a couple of weekends back already hinted at the idea that the fabric of time and space was broken or fractured, resulting in iconic landmarks from the named locations being ripped out, and other random items such as a stagecoach, skeleton, and an anchor now being transported in. The crack right over the Kitsune mask’s left eye is definitely a hint that we’ll see more time travel and sky-crackin’ goodness in Season 5.

As for the Kitsune mask itself, it’s simply tying into this idea of traveling through time and space. According to Japanese folklore, Kitsune were capable of possession, generating fire or lightning, flight, and invisibility to name a few. However, it’s the tales of even more powerful Kitsune that were able to bend time and space, drive people mad, or take new forms such as a massive tree or a second moon in the sky that tie more into Fortnite. I mean, how else could you explain that whole rocket launch event? Bending time and space certainly sounds about right.

Of course, the Kitsune mask could also suggest that Season 5 of Fortnite could initially kick off with a Japanese folklore or historical theme, before moving onto other iconic historical periods.

As soon as we’ve figured out more on the significance of the Kitsune mask to Fortnite’s Season 5, we’ll be sure to update this post and let you know. For more on the game in the meantime, be sure to check out our ever-expanding wiki.
