State of Decay 2: How to Change Leader

How to Change Leader in State of Decay 2

Recommended Videos

Your leader in State of Decay 2 doesn’t really do a whole lot in terms of adding new gameplay mechanics into the mix. Really, what they’re there for is to give you one of four unique facilities, and a Boon that can be used in future playthroughs once you’ve successfully established their Legacy. Of course, if you’ve made a survivor your leader in State of Decay 2 without checking what their unique facility they’ll net you is, you might want to change leader. Here’s what you need to know to do exactly that.

Update 06/23/20: Following an update last year, players can now demote their leader. To do this, choose a different character to take control of and walk over to your leader in your settlement. You’ll then need to select the ‘Demote’ option. This will reset their stature within your community, and you’ll now need to rebuild that. Then, simply select the new character you want to be a leader and promote them to leader. It’s as simple as that.

Original: First off, let’s get this out of the way. There’s no way for you to easily change leader through the menus in State of Decay 2. The best way to change leader in State of Decay 2 is sadly to have them killed or exile them out of your community. However, in doing so, you’ll lose them forever. As such, if you’re going to kill or exile a character, you might want to ensure they’ve got no items equipped to ensure they’re not lost forever or left in a hard place to recover them.

Once your leader has died, the central spot on the Community menu will be empty once again. Simply highlight it as you did to choose your leader the first time in State of Decay 2, and select the survivor you want to make your community’s leader.

We know it’s not the most ideal situation, especially if you’ve spent ages upgrading their stats and making them a zombie-killing machine, but if you want to change leader, it’s what has to be done.

That’s all you need to know to change leader in State of Decay 2. For more on the game, be sure to check out our ever-expanding wiki.
