Super Mario Odyssey: How to Get the Volleyball Power Moons

How to Get the Volleyball Power Moons in Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is the latest installment in Mario’s expansive list of adventures and quite possibly the biggest, with hundreds different Power Moons to collect. Some are incredibly easy, while others can be challenging. Right up there at the top as one of the most difficult and tedious Power Moons to get are the volleyball Power Moons in the Seaside Kingdom.

On the Southwest side of the level you can find a small resort building at the edge of the beach. In that area is an innocuous little volleyball court. Should you step on that court after taking care of the story missions you’ll be treated to a little mini-game where Mario has to bounce back a volleyball that a snail throws at him.

Sounds easy, right? Not quite. Sure, it starts off simple (not to mention painfully slow), but playing it well can earn you two Power Moons. You get one for hitting the ball 15 times and another for hitting it 100 times. It’s the latter one that’s a real headache.

The problem is Mario has a bit of windup whenever he moves in Super Mario Odyssey, so when the ball starts to actually move fast you’re very likely to slip up and miss long before you come close to 100 volleyball hits. Thankfully, there’s actually a very simple way to make your life easier: Start up Two-Player Mode.

You’ll want to do this Super Mario Odyssey mini-game as Cappy. After you get started, separate Mario and Cappy and get Cappy onto the volleyball court. Once he’s in position, put Mario on the volleyball court to start the mini-game and immediately get Mario off of the court so you won’t accidentally bump into him. From there, just play the mini-game. It’ll still take some skill, but Cappy moves significantly faster than Mario and has full 360-degree movement with no windup so he makes the challenge much easier.

If you fail, don’t worry. Ignore what the game says about leaving the court and just hit the ball again to restart the mini-game. After a few tries the Power Moon should be yours. Good luck!
